Honda Civic Shuttle 4WD, called a Beagle this is 5 speed manual 4WD with a super low extra gear. Been very well maintained by previous owner and drives well. New WOF and rego until July. Presents well for age and kms. Air conditioning works well.
Please inspect before bidding, as traded, normal auction rules apply, payment within 3 days of auction close
The car was auctioned at $1 reserve, meaning highest bidder wins. The afternoon the car was listed I spotted it and someone had already bid $1 on it, I decided to give the seller a call to see if he would sell outright. We had a chat but the dealer wasn't to keen to let it go, he said that if the car is still on $1 the next day then we can talk again. Next day comes around, but the car has already reached $100odd. I decided to give the dealer a call, after a chat I make him a offer and we agree on a purchase price, as long as i continue to bid on the auction on Trademe and ensure I win it, even if it is above the price we agreed on. All this happened on friday.
Later that day I organised a flight and ferry to get the car back home. I have to admit I did rush in to this purchase a bit, not getting it inspected etc. But somehow it all turned out ok, I think. Below is a map my travels to get the car; Im located at A and the car at B, which is only a 45min flight apart, but also a 4hr drive and 3.5hr ferry.
Since the car was listed Iv been doing a bit of research on it to find out the car history.
Below is some screen shots of the car history since it came in to the country.
The car came in to the country on 01/10/1998 through Honda Riccarton, it was then purchased by a lady called Colleen Anne Williams. In 23/06/2000 Colleen sold the car back to Honda and on 25/08/2000 Roderick Harry Taylor bought the car. Roderick has owned the car for the last 13 years and finally traded the car in to Rem Cars Ltd on 09/01/13 for a 2013 Toyota Corolla, according to the dealer. Rem Cars Ltd is now selling the car.
The fact that the car has been owned by the same person for the last 13odd years made me slightly more comfortable that im buying a car that I haven't had the chance to inspect. Did a bit of research in to Roderick, he was born in 1956 so I cant image the car was ever thrashed. Still, I can admit that I should have inspected it before hand.
Anyway, Sunday rolled around which is when my flight was booked to go down to Christchurch, which nearly didn't take of due to fog. Flight departed at 10am, landed in Christchurch just before 11am and met the dealer in the parking lot at the airport. Did a quick inspection over the car to ensure there isn't anything obvious that the dealer hasn't mentioned. Through doing some research and talking to Andrew/NZ-Db8R I noted the follow things to check:
Rust inspections:
- Under the spare tyre in the boot
- Around the rear tail lights as they often leak
- Around the window sills, side, rear and windshield
- On the fire wall
And then just the basic checks like such as;
- Any milkyness under the oil cap
- Oil in the coolant
- Engine smoke (when idling, after deceleration when accelerating)
- Engine noises (knocks, grinds, winds)
- Condition of A/C, power steering belts.
- Any creeks/bouncyness in the suspension
- Tyre condition
- Body/interior damaged
Did a 10min check over the car for the above, Didn't spot any rust, car has some fine scratches in the paint and clear coat peeling on the roof. Interior is in decent condition, has all factory interior. Only damage is the drivers side has a rip which was taped up and the parcel tray/cargo cover has some damage on the hinges, other that that its just a filthy mess, wouldn't have been cleaned for years. Engine is absolutely spotless, dirty yet again but sounds smooth, no smoke. Clean oil, fresh coolant, clean clutch and brake fluids. Clutch has a good amount of life and gearbox smooth as well. At this stage I was happy with the car and completed the sale.
Picture of just after I picked it up, filling up and checking oils etc again before heading home.
Those racing red bucket seat covers weren't included in the sale, I brought them along so I don't have to sit on someone els's filth.
So now to travel 4hours north and then jump of the ferry for another 3.5hours. On the trip to the ferry I discovered that the shocks are a bit worn, I guess this can be expected for a car that's done nearly 300,000km. Also, we found a oil leak which wasn't there at the time when we picked the car up. I assume the car didn't do long distances when Roderick had it and only showing now once its driven on the open roads. Picture of the leak, it looks worse than it is lol. I'm thinking its from the gearbox/diff? as the engine oil level hasn't dropped and the oil is below the intake manifold and sort of flicks ups. Will get some better photos but heres a quick one.
So, the car is now home and next up is to give the car some TLC.
Here's my to do list:
- Replace shocks/springs
- Locate Oil leak and fix
- Check over the car for any further leaks, rust, clearly worn bushes/joints etc
- Service:
Engine oil
oil filter
Fuel filter
spark plugs
brake/clutch fluid
coolant
Gearbox Oil
Diff Oil
New thermostat
New whiper blades
- Groom exterion, interior and engine bay.
- Repair seat damages and cargo cover.
Phew. Lots of talk sorry. Overall happy with the car, think I paid a fair price and enjoying the car already.
Few pics of the trip.
Car is yet to be named.
As this thread is titled, I am a virgin to the world of Shuttles. So if I get something wrong or say something incorrct then dont feel bad about correcting me, I dont mind. Im here to learn.

there should only be one name for it ...
MARY (virgin Mary)
all the best to you and your build
Love the suggestion, cheers. It is in the list of considerations
Bloody hell, more NZH members on here than HT.

And thank you.

that was the first thing i did on it as well, FULL SERVICE and FULL GROOM. then adjusties blah blah blah..
i bet you, you will maybe just say its just for everyday car, do a good maintenance on it, next minute your on adjusties, turbo or engine swap, etc. U will def fell inlove with this wagons. hahaha
GOODLUCK Dieter.
Cheers dude
I saw somewhere you going turbo? Keeping the 4wd?
Aw no I can't allow myself to take this car as far as I took the ek9, which really isn't ridiculously far compared to thousands of other people's projects.
Im really enjoyed the motor in the beagle though (D16y in NZ?), it doesn't have heaps of power and thats all good. My ek9 is b16b and also doesn't have much power, high kw just has never been what I wanted to achieve, but its a joy to drive.
Although I must admit, Im already creating a list of "modifications" I want to do.
Most of them just small simple things/changes.
Its just a daily. Sad no one ever.
Happens everyday to unsuspecting people, it kills more relationships than slutty university girls. True story.
it did kill a relationship for a bit.. hahah. :encouragement:
This man speaks the truth!
Oh sorry mate, hope I do it justice
Yep it will all be subtle. Little things like blanky on the rear seats, woodgrain nardi, find a front lip and DA rear lip etc etc. Will only start doing that once I get the shocks and oil leak fixed. Still unsure what I want to do about the ride height and suspension, a bit guttered I cant fit any of my wheels on this car lol (Dan, geoff etc want to swap some 98spec wheels for some 4x100 wheels?)
I'm going camping up north of Auckland in late Feb and want to take the shuttle up so aim is to fix all the issues before then.
I'm going to try and replicate the scene in the original sales brochure haha
That seams to be correct, aunty Wikipedia says SOHC ZC as well, Cheers
Great pickup man! Keep the updates coming!
I haven't seen a beagle with auto transmission... we all have manual over here afaik.
Cheers mate
There was a Auto beagle for sale on Trademe about a month ago.
Nope not dc5r, gunmetal 98spec dc2r wheels.
No sank you, those p1s are far to new for me.
I saw somewhere your getting Works. Spill it, which model Works?
Once degreased and rinsed I waited for the water to dry and then drove the car for 5mins. Came back to my garage and had a look to see if I can locate the leak. Looks like oil is leaking out of the transfer case differential seal. Decided to degrease the engine again just to make sure, checked it again and it does look to be the transfer case differential seal. Hoping to fix the issue by this week providing I can source a seal in time.
Also started to document the interior. I haven't had the chance to clean the interior and like I mentioned in the 1st post, its a filthy. Dirt all over, wouldn't have been cleaned in years.
Doors are in good condition, no scuffs that caused any damage. All electric windows and switches work.
Passeger seat is in good condition, drivers side is a bit worn. Hoping to get the drivers seat of Geoff's beagle wreck, if not then ill just get some material I like and fix my seat up. Its not too much of an issue, and can look quite good when done nicely.
Rear seats in good condition, no rips etc. Just need to replace the little release button thingy, which shouldn't be hard to source.
Parcel tray is in ok condition, thinking of making some new hinges just to strengthen the end bit (closest to camera) as they have weakened a bit and sagging. Side storage units open and close perfect. There are some white marks which I'm thinking may be scratches and not something than can be cleaned off. Missing the hatches on the left and right bottom storage units. Still has original spare wheel and tools.
Not sure f the aircon works, it didn't on the trip back home but there is also no gass in the system. Stereo works perfect although doesn't get all the radio stations thats broadcasted in NZ (only goes up to 90odd FM). Clock works perfect. All the Electric mirrors and windows switches are sweet. Switches for the front and rear foglights work fine, aswell as the rear demister and hazard lights. Only switch that doesn't work is for the headlight squirters, either that or the water pump for it is not working. Steering wheels is a bit worn, although planning to replace in the future anyway. Also has cool coin tray.
Had a good look over the car again for any damages or rust.
Only rust I could find are some surface rust on the rear hatches hinges, nothing bad at all and simple to repair. No rust anywhere els.
Like I mentioned in one of the earlier posts, the roof's clear coat has peeled of the roof. To be honest I'm not to worried about this, its not a priority or a big issue for me at the moment. My intention is not to have a show car. Also some oxidation on the roof rack thing, which I will eventually repaint. Very little clear coat peeling of the bonnet, will need to make sure it doesn't get any worse. Some little paint chips down the side of the windows as well, might need to do something here to prevent any rust starting in the future.
Front foglight has a damaged PIAA grill and a slight crack in the glass, wanting to replace the grill and planning on tinting the glass yellow. Right rear foglight has a small chip in it, either replace if I can source a new lens or just repair, the broken chip has luckily fallen in to the light so I can glue it on. Spider will move out asap :P. Missing one chrome exhaust tip, definitely want 2 so will source another somewhere.
Overall the body is very straight, found 2 tiny dents most probably due to doors being opened on to the car. Need to replace the headlight and foglight bulbs as they are quite dull. I quite like driving with my rear fog lights on when I have my other light on at night, so Ill put in bulbs that aren't so bright so it doesn't blind drivers behind me. A bit of water in the rear tail light that I need to drain and reseal the taillights.
Also found a sweet owners manual in the car
Overall not to bad, a couple of things to fix and replace but nothing to serious. Cant wait to clean this car, driving me nuts that its so filthy! Hopefully next update it will be driving with no oil leak, a serviced engine and a clean interior
Cheers for reading,
Dieter.
Cheers dude, appreciate it. Another Beagle just popped up for sale, had a sunroof and in red. I would love to have a sunroof, although that one sold in 2 days and nearly double the price I paid for mine.
The yellow spots on CRV's are the reason Im tinting mine haha cheers for the tip, will have a hunt.
Cheers dude Looks a lot cleaner in the photos, still needs a few good washes before all the years of dirt and grime is gone!
