Dan's EF3 DOHC ZC Shuttle

So I bought another Shuttle, this time an EF which is what I wanted in the first place for a family hauler, I paid $200 for her and I was expecting a whole lot worse than what I have got.
She is a '91 EF3 56i, so sohc zc and fuel injected The auto slips, the rear windscreen is smashed out, there is an exhaust leak/no tail piece and there are a few little niggly things that are going to need attention.
The goal at the moment is to fix shit up and get a WOF on it, that is if the trans is ok after a fluid change, if its not and I can find a cheap auto I may chuck it in and just let the wife hoon around in it for a while.
BUT
The plan is to do DOHC ZC and manual conversion using my poor old rusty CRX as the doner vehicle.
I spent a few hours today getting rid of rubbish from inside the car, making a list of shit that needs doing/replacing and a fuckload of cleaning and of course I didnt take any pics of what it looked like before I did anything but I can tell you it was a fucken mess!
The door cards were off, and things were disconnected and a heap of fuses were missing so I replaced those too.
I also put my little black minilites/watanabes on as I had issues with the Advans rubbing on the caliper brackets.
What is a build thread without pics!
With the Advans
Watanabe/minilites
My nice clean interior, this took friggin hours to get looking like this!
The spare wheel cover has been "customised" and a piece of MDF wood was screwed into the spare wheel cover so a mean sub could be mounted. Gutted when I saw the mess the young guy made.
Sunroof that is rust free (Y) lots of paint fade though!
Engine bay
So there she is, I am going to put my lowering springs from the crx in this weekend aswell as the front and rear strut braces and with any luck there will be a shuttle with a good hatch sitting at pick a part tomorrow!
The intention of this car is for it to be my wife's daily and our family cruiser so its not gonna be stupidly slammed or herra frush but it should still be pretty sweet

Had to fit the shuttle front suspension back into the crx so it can still be mobile so that sucked up a bit of time and I had all 3 of my daughters "helping" me so it took waaaaaay longer than it should have.
Checked the ATF (finally) and its low and looks pretty old so I am think a fluid change will at least help with the slipping issue.
I popped the dent on the front guard out a little so its not as in your face
I am hoping to get the rear suspension done this morning before we go do family shit for easter but its not looking promising
I painted my EF front lip too
I am hoping to get the lip fitted this morning if I cant do the suspension, I am getting a rear window priced on Tuesday as there were no shuttles at the local pick-a-part.
I think that is as much car time I will get today, gonna take this for its maiden family haulin' voyage soon and hopefully convince the wife that she needs a Shuttle in her life!
Im really starting to like this Shuttle!
I am a little dissapointed that she doesn't want it but at the same time i'm stoked cos I get heaps more freedom to do what I want to it.
A quick pic of how she is looking after a couple of days in my possesion
new wagon is looking good!!
i will take those Advans off your hands....
My 3 year old daughter loosening the wheel nuts on the crx
My 7 year old daughter removing the wheel from the crx
A few of the boys turned up to stand around and talk shit and then this big white heron turned up and got in on the banter
So after all the shit talking I put both the crx and the shuttle back together and drove up my driveway for these pics
x2
It looked a whole lot worse when it was dirty inside and out and covered in months of bird shit but it has scrubbed up real nice. Cant wait for it to be manual and dohc zc powered!
Turns out the White Heron is a rare bird in NZ with the number in the entire country being only 100-120 so to have one turn up and chill with the boys is something that probably will never happen again.
In for more!
Killer car, though it is odd for blokes in the US to see the RHD!
The EF hatch glass I don't think will fit. Lots of stuff on the wagons are wagon-only, sadly.

Nothing has happened so far this week, I will try and do something constructive on the shuttle tomorrow.
I am having a hard time finding hatch glass but im sure if I am patient some will pop up!
Good score anyway, looks like it only needs a little elbow grease to get it perfect.
Yeah I thought it was sohc ZC too, I just went by what was on the underside of the bonnet because I was being lazy.
But as you can see, after I scraped away some caked on grease and oil it is infact a sohc ZC as I had first thought and as was pointed out :P
So not entirely sure what is going on, perhaps a new bonnet at some stage of its life?
I have 3 daughters and I can't do anything on the cars without them! Today I was watching RedBull X-fighters with my 2 & 3 year old girls and both of them were jumping around loving it and then my 3 year old had a cry cos she couldn't have a turn on the bike!!
It is pretty sweet having daughters that love cars and bikes as much as I do!
My wife has made her decision on the shuttle and she isn't keen on it so I am keeping it as my car, I may even sell Shannon the shuttle cos I cant justify keeping both tbh and I prefer the EF to the AK in nearly every way.
So I need to pull the dohc zc from my crx, clean it up, fix oil leaks and chuck it in the shuttle very soon!
HJopefully you can start the manual swap in like a month (Y)
If the Auto wont select 3rd gear i would suspect its a problem with the solenoid. If you can get your hands on another 3rd gear solenoid and test it out it might solve your problems. I believe all the solenoids are mounted outside the box so no need to drop the box and take it apart.
Thanks for the info on the solenoid, I might look into it this weekend.
We have found some glass for the hatch and it should be here in a week or so with any luck so once that is installed the next mission is the swap. I am itching to get into it but I just started fulltime at the new job and I dont have alot of time on my hands at the moment.
Not sure what compelled me to just get into it but i'm bloody stoked I did. I will post some pics up a little later but there isn't a hell of a lot to see.
