Got an 88 RT and have a bad ujoint myself, found rockford thread on here, whoo hoo, then found this sweet build!! I have been wanting an offroader tat gets better mileage than my jeep but now I have direction!! Thanks for this build and great details bro! also have an 87rt4 hven't decided what to do wit that one yet...

Thanks man, i appreciate the kind words...

So basically FML right now...Got the forward most u-joint replaced and the front have of the drive line back in. Drove about a half mile before my transaxle grenaded. Sounds like we sheered a tooth on the ring and pinion? (im not a motor savvy person yet so i may not be 100% correct in my terms)

Anyways. I've got a spare RT up at my fiance's dads house that we're going to yank the transaxle out and rebuild it. Anybody rebuilt one? i havn't done any searching yet so if anybody has a link throw it down please! HOPEFULLY once we swap that out...i'll be good to go and wont have anything else to fix....

    Jane fucking hates me.

  • so i searched a bit and didnt turn anything up...anybody rebuilt a transaxle?

When you say transaxle, are you meaning the transmission??
  • No I mean my transaxle:..because Jane is an RT4WD wagon with a shitty transaxle. Wikipedia transaxle.
  • That story now brings me to the current and present....this is my current problem.

You're getting to know your lady... you'll both be good in the future :)

Or I can come pickup what remains of her when you burn out
  • I'm in balls deep now lol. By the time were done Jane is gonna be a brand new wagon....just got to figure out everything that's wrong with the transfercase and check intO the transmission.
  • JDOGGJDOGG Band Wagon
sounds like you should think of just replacing it all with a b20 out of a AWD CRV or k24 out of a AWD CRV you would need a lot of money, time, and custom shit but in the end i bet it would be worth it. :D
  • D-series for life. F UR K.
  • Well we got the motor out and such....took about 2.5 hours.

Pulled the transmission off and can't get it apart. We took every bolt possible off and it still won't slide more than 3/4 of an inch apart, any secrets???

Pics when I get to my computer.

    i'll fill you in now....

So long story short, we decided to rebuild my current A6 instead of wait for H-motors to get a SOHC ZC in that will work for Jane. We waited over a month and a half and they still have yet to get a single SOHC ZC in. We began disassembling the the block on the awesome harbor freight engine stand!

    181.jpg

    182.jpg

got the timing cover and valve cover off

    183.jpg

pulled the belt and pulleys and head off

    184.jpg

    pulled the oil pan

    185.jpg

pulled the oil pick up and girdle

    186.jpg

    pulled the crank, rods, pistons

    187.jpg
  • sent the crank, girdle, and oil pickup to my buddys shop and he threw them in his parts washer. Left them there for a day or so and pulled them out nice and pretty now.

    Hell yeah, git 'er done!
  • we cleaned up the block and decided we would paint it because we're waiting for parts to show up. Everybody loves a little gold right? Also we honed the walls a bit just to clean them up and let the rings seed well when we put it back together.

    195.jpg

got a few of the parts...still waiting on rings and main bearings. first part that came in was the eagle rods

    196.jpg

then the JE 9:8:1 pistons came

    197.jpg

i've had a cometic head gasket laying around for a while as well as ARP head studs and a Hondata intake manifold gasket. pretty much just need a timing kit and some random seals/gaskets.
  • Looking great man!!!! I want to see this car in person one of these days.
  • Glad to see some movement on this thing.. bumpin the compression a lil from the stock 9.1:1 for a pinch more power =)
Jane is most likely enjoying the shit outta you tickling her insides!!

Lol. Honestly the only reason for the compression bump is because I got the pistons and rods from my buddy at horsepowerfreaks for DIRTY cheap....I just hope Jane stays running once were done with her insides.
  • Oh she'll be great haha a6's are INSANELY underestimated!! =)
  • minor workings done tonight....got the block saver in the mail..

    493.jpg

got the new bearings in and crank in..

    494.jpg

    painted the tranny

It wont stay gold for long I'm sure...but I think I looks neat!
  • Well i have some significant updates going on here. First off we notched the block and the girdle so the rods would fit.

    679.jpg

    680.jpg

put in my block saver, added insurance.

    681.jpg

Did the valve seals, they were REALLY bad

    old
    682.jpg

    new
    683.jpg

    ARP head studs/cometic head gasket

    684.jpg

got the head on and torqued

    685.jpg

then i got the head painted and got the cam and such in
