TYPE-R brakes on the RT4WD How-To!!!!

**** Not a true TYPE-R setup because of the rotors ****

The process is exactly as changing pads/rotors. Super simple and a quick procedure!

Parts needed:
'97 TYPE-R Calipers (17CL15VN, same as Accord Wagons)
'97 TYPE-R bracket (23t)
'97 TYPE-R pads
'93 LS rotors
Brake Fluid
Beer

Caliper brackets need to be machined 3.2mm or .127in.

10.3" LS rotor vs. 9.5" RT4wd rotor
439.jpg

RT4wd pad vs. TYPE-R pad (TYPE-R pad is same size as RT4wd caliper  )
440.jpg

Front pad needs to be ground to clear rotor hat.

Comparison of small RT4wd calipers vs. TYPE-R calipers

Spent $50 on the TYPE-R calipers/brackets(thanks noahrexion), $60 on pads/rotors after using my commercial discount at Schucks, and machined the brackets myself. So altogether $110 for almost TYPE-R brakes that stop fucking amazing, I have to keep myself from faceplanting the steering wheel when I brake hard. Definitely worth it!!!!!!!

How's the pedal feel with these? I may have to upgrade sooner than not. :D

Also, are all ITR pads the same? Or was there a difference between '96-'97 and '98+?
  • evol911evol911 familEE
I'm using the 15/16" MC from an early Accord I think. Don't quite remember but the brake pedalfeels about the same as the regular Rt4wd calipers with the 15/16" MC just stops so so so much better. I think my next upgrade will be to the 1" MC and brake booster from an Integra to stiffen up the feel of the brake pedal a bit and of course get more fluid moving those big ass calipers.

Here is the list of cars that all use the TYPE-R brake pad so I'm guessing the calipers would be the same or close to it. Something to think about when at the parts yard...

    Acura
    1997 - 1999 CL
    1991 - 2005 NSX
    1997 - 1998 Integra
    1996 - 1998 RL
    2000 - 2001 Integra
    1995 - 1998 TL
    1991 - 1995 Legend
    1992 - 1994 Vigor

    Honda
    1991 - 2002 Accord (Wagon specific)
    1995 - 1998 Odyssey
    1997 - 2001 CR-V
    1993 - 2001 Prelude

    Isuzu
    1996 - 1999 Oasis

    Brilliant.
So if i want to do this, what kind of shop do i take my caliper brackets to, and will they look at me like i'm border line retarded?

this looks like the best, cheapest way to upgrade the brakes that i've seen.
  • evol911evol911 familEE
Find an automotive machine shop like a place that does cylinder honing or head resurfacing. A shop that does those things should have the right machine to mill the brackets. It's a simple set-up to machine so I would think it would cost maybe $50 at the most being as its only an hour job or so. I can't stress how simple it was to do this upgrade but I would definitely recommend a bigger master cylinder than the stock wagon.
  • Great job, glad everything worked out. I must say my meager 10.1" Integra brakes are noticeably more heat resistant (all I wanted) than the stock RT stuff. These upgrades are so simple to do, its amazing more people don't do this.

this seems like a lot of work grinding down the pad and carriers

would it not be easier to get siR hubs/TREs and then get Prelude calipers (I used Rover ones as they bolted straight on with no grinding or modification to my VT and more available in the UK, and cheaper!!)

when you say Type-R brakes, do you mean early spec DC2's yeh?, so 262's?
  • SiWagonSiWagon Council Member
Evol911,I'll take a stab at this.Yes you're right. The SiR hub is probably what we stateside call the EX knuckle(hub) which are a rare over here.A lot of chaps here do as Evol911 did.

    what about the rear wheels
  • klum wrote:

Yeah what about the rear wheels??? Thats something I haven't tried yet, if any one can give me the specs on the adapter plates I can make them. I just don't have time to tear down my rear end for R&D plus I don't have an rear disc setups.
  • klumklum Senior Wagonist
wasnt there a post about adapter plates awhile back i just recently got a wagon again ,4wd this time too! and im trying to find out what can be done about the brakes because they suck balls.
  • Marc_EE9Marc_EE9 Senior Wagonist
i like having rear drums. only 20% braking is from the rear, and drums are good enough ;)

i might try this one day

what application do we find the same caliper bracket on integras?
  • Marc_EE9Marc_EE9 Senior Wagonist
    what model is an LS?

    1.6?
  • klumklum Senior Wagonist
also would any year integra type r caliper/bracket combo work?
  • bmotorsbmotors New Wagonist
well for my 91 sedan i used da knuckles and bearings, had type r hubs machined to fit in da bearings and rest was type r calipers, pads and rotors (5lug) ....i think there was a write up some where ...it was for a da integra but same stuff...ill post pics if needed
  • klum wrote:

All Type-R calipers/brackets are the same. Accord Wagons use the same caliper/bracket as the Type-R

    @Marc_EE9
Integra 1.8(B18A1???) LS is the DA chassis code Integras, made between 90-93
  • klumklum Senior Wagonist
sorry i guess u said that lol
thanks for the clairification i shall do your upgrade. thanks again

arent legend 90-95 the same also?
basiclly as long as it has a 23t stamp its goodto use after the .3mm is grinded off/

    17CL15VN caliper is a 262mm caliper.
    96-98 ITR have 262mm and 98-00 ITR have 282mm I thought

what other discs are the same in Honda's as the Integra LS?

Yeah I basically just asked the parts store for '97 Integ Type-R pads and '90 Integ LS 10.3 rotors. Not sure what other Honda's use the 10.3 rotors...

    Found this for you Marc:

Look for the 23t bracket and the 17CL15VN caliper and you should be golden.

Here is what Schucks Auto Parts says about other Honda's that use the Type-R caliper:

also.... 10.3" ia 262mm, which is the same as early Integra ITR, Civic/CRX siR, and im sure the same as the Integra DA6 XSi
  • Why not just use a 11.1" rotor?

What proportioning valve should we use on the RT models where we can't swap the rears to disk?

the 11.1 wont fit inside the caliper

and why would you want to change the rears to discs? drums ftw

You can use the 11.1 with the EX knuckles becasue they position the calipers further out from center than the RT4wd or Si/DX knuckles.

Rt4wds use a bigger drum than normal and with the diffuculty of swapping discs to the rears might as well just use the drums.

Sorry but I don't really understand your question about the proportioning valve...

Just use rt4wd otherwise try to source out 90-91 civic ex proportioning valve.
  • so it says "type r brakes on the rt4wd" does this mean it wont work on just the fwd? cause im looking to do a break upgrade this winter and unfortunatly only have a fwd. will this fit my '91?

The RT4wd uses the same front knuckles as the CRX Si/ Civic Si, Civic Dx, 2wd Wagon (the list goes on)... So in short, YES, this will work for all front knuckles EXCEPT the EX and I think the HF.

    Why not DA knuckles?
  • just got a set of 91 accord wagon calipers today at pull-a-part (local salvage yard). got them for $8.48 each!!! the bracket says 25t but bolts up with no problems, no to get new rotors and ss lines!
