Jaker's ride

  • We were up to 222whp - 175ft/lbs. The peak HP was at 7,000 rpm and then it really dropped fast, and the peak torque was 6,400 or so. Torque stayed at or above 170 ft/lbs from 3,400 to 7,000 rpm. The power needs to carry a lot higher in the rev range before I'll be happy. That involves uncorking the motor. The boost is there. I just need to get it into the combustion chamber.

where did that cf hood come from??? is that custom?
  • Here's the dyno plot of the last run before the motor let go:

  • That's a bummer. What compression ratio are you going to try on the next engine? At least the engines are easy/cheap to come by!

dam thats stinks..... i have that 88 bottom end if u cant find a decent rebuildable bottom end u can have it.

    what happend?

and yes the block is machined and ready to go

    just curiouse how much?
  • Thanks for the offer. I will be using the same piston/rod setup I have now. I'll likely only need to replace one piston. Since this is the 2nd time I've lost a sleeve on this setup, I'll be going with a sleeved block this time around. Probably Golden Eagle.

I have other things that I need to take care of right now, so the post mortem on the car will have to wait. All I know for sure is that the motor went "poof" with a puff of steam after the throttle was closed at the end of the dyno pull, and it had nothing. There was a ton of water in cylinder #2, and some steam coming from #4. I think the steam in #4 was coming from #2 through the intake manifold because of the position of the cam (#2 and #4 valves opened at the same time, pretty normal). Neither James nor I really understand exactly what happened.

carnage pics when u get them please.
  • sounds like the head lifted off the block enough to let water escape. head stud problem?

from that dyno looks like its time to port the head and maybe run a longer duration cam like bisi 2.8

this thing is awesome. What is the weight rule for the class?
  • JakerJaker familEE
    Street Modified is:

1,800lbs base weight for RWD car.
200 lbs per litre of engine displacement
1.4 litres added to your displacement for forced induction
200lb weight reduction for using tires in 275 section width or narrower.

That puts my car pretty much exactly at 2,200lbs. It was 2,240 last year, but it'll be under weight this year.

I'm also going nuts with the motor. It'll be 1,780cc this next build, with many many enhancements to the overall package. I GOTTA get to the 300whp, 250ft/lbs torque goal.

should be a rocket with those numbers. watched a vid of a newer si with a supercharged k20z3 on making 300whp and it looked like fun. just doin a lil research for our new car :D

So as many of you already know, I'm packing it in on the build. I've decided I don't want to drop any more cash into the wagon. The failure (see pics below) on the dyno in Feb made me realise that I need to spend about another $10k on the engine build to "do it right". I am not prepared to do that.

There is absolutely no signs of detonation. I just think that the loads from the high boost and the work that the crank/motor had to do to spin the blower to 26 psi was too much for the OEM sleeves, even though they were posted. The piston appears to have absolutely no damage whatsoever.

Permatex Ultra Grey. A thin layer around the oil and water passages. Nothing around the cylinders/fire rings. Helps a lot to stop early/light leaks. I've been doing that for years. Haven't blown a headgasket forever (he says with his fingers crossed). I have however blown a few sleeves over the last little while   !

    Well, darn.

well that sucks, but its understandable. there just comes a point when the hole youve been throwing money into fills up. Thats how i was with the awd gsr. Miss the car a lot, but excited to see where new owner is taking it. Im just bummed I never got to ride in it.

Ill have to make some time someday and come meet ya and see Mr Sasso again. Its been years and years.

Sad to see it go, Your car is what finally pushed me over the edge to get a wagon. And man, that sleeve is quite the sight. I've never seen one come apart like that.
  • bummer......

    sad : (

wish you the best in your next endeavours.

keep us informed and thanks for all your help.
  • ludemanludeman Wagonist
You obviously have a gift for making bad ass cars. I'm sure any future projects will come out just as nice if not better than the wagon. Sad times when a wagoneer like you leaves the community, but I hope you keep around and continue to spread your expertise

Thanks guys. I'm now feeling full of remorse :( . Oh well, too late now! I'm over it 8) .
