Air Conditioning Problem: 89 Civic Warm AC! Please Help!

Problem: Hi guys, I am having some difficulties with my AC. When I bought my wagon, I was told that the AC needed Freon to work. I quickly bought the AC R12 to R134A adapters to recharge the system with the R134A Freon. After putting three bottles of R134A Freon (one with leak detector, another with compressor oil, and the last one with just Freon), nothing worked. I noticed that even though the A/C compressor used to take off, the air conditioning did not turn cold. I decided to take it to my muffler guy who is also does AC system. As you may know, these machines clean up the AC system, recharge the AC compressor oil and also the Freon. After having the machine working on my AC system for about an hour, the specialist says that I could have a bas expansion valve. I ordered one on AutoZone online for about $13.99 ($13.99 + $5.99 shipping + taxes = $21.50). I installed myself. I took my wagon back to the shop for the AC system cleaning and it did not work either. Now the guy at the shop is telling me that the compressor could be the problem. He says that even though the AC compressor takes off, it does not have enough compression to pump the AC system correctly. He said that I should get another AC compressor. The guy fills the system up with freon, the AC compressor still kicks in but the AC does NOT blow cold. I do want to buy the new compressor because I feel that the guy could be wrong again and he could make me change my compressor without needing it. Thanks God he has not charged me for anything yet to recharge the system but I do not want to change my compressor if it is not really necessary. Please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I want my AC to work cold!!!!!!!!!!!

Update 07/24/2010: I took the wagon today to another AC specialist I did not tell him the previous mechanic diagnostic He just put Freon and charged the system. Everything went fine. The AC is working just fine. Especially the AC compressor. I was right when I decided not to buy a new compressor. Thanks God, so far so good.

Update 06/23/2012: Hello guys! I have another problem with my AC. I have to start up by mentioning that I had to ad Freon every 6 months to my AC system. I added the leak detector Freon but I did not notice any leaks anywhere (No lines, compressor, or condenser leaks). Now I tried putting Freon. But my AC still was not blowing that cold, especially when it was at idle. There was a time in which my wagon’s temperature was going over its normal position. I checked the AC and radiator fan relays and one of them was a little worm out. I changed but the problem continued. Since I had changed the expansion valve some time ago, I decided to give it a double check. The expansion valve was not too tied to the evaporator. I cleaned up the expansion valve and re-tied to the evaporator. This time, I used two tie wraps. I also checked the drier and it seemed fine. Of course, the AC system needed to be recharged. I added a 12oz R134A plus half of another one. At the beginning, the AC did not feel cold. But after a little while the AC started getting cold. The air was not that cold but good enough. After using the AC for a couple hours, I noticed that the AC started to make some noise. I checked the AC compressor and its clutch was engaging on and off. I check the low pressure line with the gauge and it was showing that there was over pressure and relining on and off. I released a little pressure by opening the low pressure valve. I noticed that compressor problem got better and the AC started to feel better but not that cold still. I checked the AC compressor and it seemed oil spread at the compressor and surroundings. Now, I check low pressure line with the gauge and it shows low pressure or low refrigerant. The AC blows slightly cold; well I would say almost nothing. I took the car to service the AC system and the mechanic suggested me to change the compressor because of the oil spread at the compressor. As of now the AC still blows minimal cold and I could notice that the eye glass on top of the drier shows Freon circulation…. This problem is driving me crazy!! Help guys!!

Do you think that there is a AC extra pressure release valve in my compressor or do you think that the compressor is blown?? It is crazy but the AC still blows a little cold air... If the compressor would have been blown the AC would not work at all... I am confused! Help!!

Also, Would an AC compressor work even after spreading all the oil out from AC system high compression issue???

Update 07/04/2012: Today, I installed a REMANUFACTURED AC compressor, new expansion valve and new drier! professionally freon filled! The AC blows cold at the begining and then it gets warm after a while.... THIS IS DRIVING ME CRAZZZZZZZYYYYYYYYYY! I expended more than $500 today and this AC still does not work properly!!! What that heck?????????????????? HELLLPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !

Summary Update 08/06/2012: The AC blows cold when I first start the car and AC system. Then after 15-20 minutes, the air conditioner begins feeling warm/humid. The A/C will not change back to normal cold until I turn off the car and let the car sit overnight. It is only when the AC blows cold for about 20 minutes and then go back to warm/humid.... Please help me!!!!!

Yes, I am going to do that. Thank you for your suggestion!

You may have new probs. One you should 've kept the R12.It's colder. The muffler "AC" guy should have pressure gauges to test the AC so he's probably NO good.During your R134/o-ring & exp valve install if you left the system open for more than 3-5 days(can't remember how long) you MUST replace the Drier.Click the Civic shop manual link @the bottom of this link:

Do as much as you can as directed in the shop manual to figure out maybe what happen.

    Good Luck

Yes, you are right about keeping the R12. It is a little hard to get it though. Yes, the guy had pressure gauges which supposedly showed him that there was not enough pressure pumped by the AC compressor to the AC system so it would not blow cold… However, since he was wrong when he told me that what was wrong with the car was the AC expansion valve, I am not sure if I should believe him and change the Ac compressor….
  • somewhere, someone, borrowed parts you think should be replaced...
after that, you can buy the new stuff...

    it's complicated...

Is he oil at the clutch end of the compressor or at the rear? There is a safety relief valve in the back of the compressor that will open if there's too much pressure. I'm not sure what that threshold is psi-wise.

It is at the front of the compressor... everything around it is splashed with oil....

It is crazy but the AC still blows a little cold air still... If the compressor would have been blown the AC would not work at all... This is very confusiong... I was even thinking about let all the Freon out and try adding the right amount... It may just be that.... I do not know !@$#$^%*&;^*(
  • If your using freon cans to fill your a/c system all your doing is adding moisture to the system , get a shop to remove all the freon , oil and vacum the system out with a a/c machine and have them put back in the right amount back in . also check to see if your condensor fan is working properly . Go from there

I think that is what I should have done in the first place... however, I think that I am a little late for that... I am just hoping that my AC compressor is not blown... I am going to try to take the wagon to another AC especialist...

huh?? How adding moisture? I charged a few hundred systems with cans before recovery machines even existed. Still do routinely at home.

Reaccion: if there's oil around the nose of the compressor you have a failing seal, the easiest thing would be to replace the compressor.

I agree with you bam-bam, my cousin changed his compressor and added freon using cans and the AC is freezing cold...

:-( I was afraid to hear that... The crazy thing is that the AC still blows a little cold....

Last year I got this compressor used. I am thinking about buying a brand new remanufactured even though I do not trust them... I do not want to keep paying for used compressor that would only last one year and a half... What do you suggesst bam-bam??? (Mine is the Matsushita one)

Guys, I took the car to an air conditioning specialist. Before he serviced the system, he pointed to me that there was oil next to the compressor pulley. After vacuuming the system, the AC specialist refilled the system. Unfortunately, the AC did not blow cold air at this time. Plus the compressor was making a rumbling noise. The specialist told me that I need to replace the AC compressor.... :-( He added 1.5Lb of freon. I thought that my AC system could take around 16OZ only...

I've been using approximately 30 oz. in these systems.

Buy a reman with a warranty.

Okay, what do you think about the eBay ones?

Another question... My wagon uses the Matsushita AC compressor one, would another AC compressor from a newer Civic or Honda fit my wagon???

Im a honda tech and reason for it was in one of our modules at class how freon cans let moisture in ..... how they got that info i dont know but was trying to help and as using cans ive used this method also for years with no problems so just going with new age
  • good luck hope the compressor takes care of the problem .. sure sounds like it if its making noises

I took the car for an AC vacumm today but the compressor did not work anyways... :-( Thanks your suggestion!

Do you happend to know a newer Civic compressor that could fit the Matsushita AC compressor style??? I am looking for an upgrade...
  • The Matsushita A/C compressor honda used it from 88 -91 you can one on ebay new for less then 200 bucks comes with dryer and oring kit. Or the upgrade wich is kind of a headache if you dont know what your doing wich is going with the Sanden A/C compressor .The Matsushita (Panasonic) compressor. This compressor uses a 3-bladed impeller that slides out with centrifugal force compressing the refrigerant. The Sanden uses a spiral impeller. The Matsushita is relatively loud and has a drag feeling when engaged and the Sanden is quiet less drag on motor . But your gonna have to buy the compressor, bracket, idler pulley, belt and 2 rubber hoses that come off the compressor.

Wow! That is a great brake down! LOL... I was thinking about getting the Sanden just to get a newer one... I also thought about the stuff that I would have to get as well. So, I decided to buy the remanufactured Matsushita compressor kit offered on eBay. I made an offer to the seller and he accepted it. I actually was watching the item already :-) I will install the AC compressor myself, plus the oil, drier, and O rings! I will keep you updated!
