Starting to build my wagon! start up vid on pg.3

I finally started working on my wagon, just wanted to share a few pics of the progress and kind of paint a picture of whats going to be happening to my wagon over the next several months. The big leap was getting my old CRX out of the garage and finally getting the new wagon in to start working on it. So first thing having it in the garage, I decided a wire tuck would be a good place to start... The gist of it is unpinning all the underhood wiring (headlights, horn, radiator fan, etc), pulling it into the cabin through the firewall, then cutting, lengthening and re-routing the wires to go through the frame rails under the front fenders. The other part is routing your engine harness plugs into the cabin in a discrete area so they are not clearly visable. So far I'm about 2/3 done with the drivers side... Heres a couple pics of the progress.

Having the whole dash out will give me a good opprotunity to swap over to my manual CRX pedal assy. as well.

Once the wire tuck is more complete I'll be dropping the factory: Engine, tranny, auto shifter yadda yadda. Then I can start mocking up my new engine tranny combo which is carried over from my old CRX.

F23A7 from a 1998 Odyssey with an F22a head, Bisimoto F2D adapter plate, and a CRX Si (D-series) trans. The turbo setup there is going by by, bigger better (NICER LOOKING) things on the way.

Once mock up is done on the engine mounting it will be removed, and all the holes in the bay will be welded up, smoothed over, all seams welded and smoothed, brake prop. valve relocated, kick ass paint job and it'll be all set.

Drove out to Wasilla Alaska the other day (Palin fans HOLLA!) and scaveged some parts off a 90 LX sedan... Here's the booty

Power window reg's, window switches, painted door handles, power lock actuators... Hella nice guy, $70 for everything. Well that's it for now, I'll post up more progress as it comes.

  • Good luck man :) I'll will definetly be watching this thread!!
  • Dope! I just heard about wire tucking. I wanna do that so bad.

Well, It's been awhile since my first post. Haven't forgotten, just been too busy to keep constant updates. Plus, the stuff I've been doing is pretty boring time consuming monotonous blah. But my wiring is 90%+ complete. The wire tuck of the engine bay is complete, and so is my new engine harness. I also had to take a break from my work to pull the old motor since I found somebody to buy it. I left off with pictures of my wiring harness ready to be pulled through the frame rails on either side, so here are the wires fully pulled through, and re-connected. They do still need to be loomed though.

    342.jpg

Don't mind the masking tape, that's just my way of numbering the wires so I don't loose track of them..

Here's a shot of the bay, now that the old motor is gone and the wiring is all cleaned up it's starting to look alright.

    343.jpg

This is where my engine wiring harness will come through the cabin now... Rather than on the top of each shock tower, the plugs will come through the hole left from the auto-shift cable.
    344.jpg

This is what my engine harness looked like before I started working on it... Except mine was greasy, and very aged. All of the electrical tape was either peeling or cracking, and some of the wires were pretty crisp and brittle from the heat, especially over the transmission.
    345.jpg

So I completely unloomed the entire harness, re-routed it the way I liked, repaired bad wires, removed un-used wires (a/t related). Then I de-pinned all of the plugs one at a time and re-loomed the harness using this nice braided nylon. This is what took the longest... I probably have 20 hours wrapped up in just this harness. Here's a couple shots of how it turned out.

    346.jpg

    347.jpg
While I had the plugs de-pinned I also switched all of the ugly obd-0 plugs to the newer gray colored 0bd1+ plugs, even where it wasn't necessary.
That's it for now, I'll keep this posted as progress is made. The next post I should have the engine on the stand for the balance shaft elimination kit, then a mock-up install to see how it fits.
  • whoohaa...awwsome pix(els : )

maybe later on which is what - cable/connector

    i may say thnx

very nice progress! that bay cleaned up amazingly.

also great job on the engine harness. i like to see people do things the "right way" haha.

nice work on the power windows & locks!
and nice work on the harness!
i almost want to say that Rywire might have some competition :P .

    Harness looks nice!

Forgot to mention the other thing going on with that harness... I'm running an F series engine so the alternator is in front of the motor and typically the wiring for the alternator goes over the top of the valve cover and looks really bad. What I did was removed all the alternator wiring from that harness and it's re-routed through the side of the car so it will pop out next to the radiator and plug right into the alternator so the wiring will be all but invisible. I'll probably make a one off "heat shield/vanity cover" for the alternator to make it less noticeable altogether. Hoping to also make a color matched cover to hide the wiper motor rather than shave it like most people do. I like having wipers... The washer resevior and hoses will be tucked away but still functional as well. I probably won't have time to do a full engine bay re-paint like I initially planned though... I'm dead set on having this thing ready to drive by April

Good work on that harness! Keep the good work up man!

It just clicked for me.... why oh why are you converting a 4wd to FWD?

I mean, I understand why you may wanna go with a FWD setup. But why the extra fuss of buying a 4wd and converting it?

I'm sure you have your reasons. Just curious what they are.

ps- I really wish I would have used the nice stuff on my wire harness when I did my tuck. I just ran out of time/$$
  • AK_CRXAK_CRX New Wagonist
A few reasons... I'm running an F series w/ d-series tranny, it was my existing setup from my last crx. With an F2D setup you have to grind about 1" of extra clearance into the lower rear portion of the engine block to allow the axle to go into the D series tranny (for the drivers side axle). What I'm getting at is that there is barely enough clearance there for a regular axle, let alone an intermediate shaft like the 4wd uses. Second reason, the car came with an automatic, so I'd have to not only source a manual tranny but all of the hardware for it and re-weld the passengers side mount to accept it. Third reason When the manual 4wd tranny breaks (not if but when) They're extremely hard to find, usually very high mileage, and very expensive. Other than that it's personal preference, that's the biggest reason... I've never needed awd/4wd to keep up with evo's, wrx's, eclipses, etc. In terms of acceleration anything beyond 40mph 4wd is just parasitic drag. Just my opinion.

Oh, and the extra fuss of converting... I had my heart set on a Civic wagon. A m/t fwd would have been my preference, but this one came along and couldn't pass it up. $350, and I sold the d16 for $300... So, your technically looking at a $50 car
  • CharbCharb Administrator
You had me at $350 lol

do work son... we all wanna see this thing run!
  • keep it up. iwanna see this waggy run. i have a 88rt and its a slow ass car. i wanna go turbo d or b series in the future so i wanna learn from the experts.

ill wait and pls keep me posted.

question. Im not going a swap route due to lack of funds and i hate wiring so this is alot of fun! ive got my alt wires tucked, the lights are no biggie and injectors were a breeze... almost. In one of your pics of the harness (pre tuck) there is that box that was bolted to the left side strut tower, and a wire runs from it into the fire wall up under the dash. What did you do with it? It seems to me that it makes that loop for some reason. Stupid question but wires arnt my thing. thanks

Put it inside the car under the dash, same thing with the map sensor and such.

Damn, you guys must have thought I was dead... It's been awhile. Lot of shit has happened lately. I quit my job of three+ years selling new Honda's. Just couldn't manage to stay afloat with the way car sales are lately. I'm back at a high production body shop doing prep and polish just like I was 3+ years ago. But anyway.

Evol is right, I de-loomed the harness inside the car and re-routed quite a few things. For example the injector resistor box.. I cut the wires for the injector resistor box, then unwound them from the interior harness untill the resistor box was in a good spot, then clipped the wires to the appropriate length, then soldered and heat shrinked my connections. I did that with quite a few things to keep them under the dash rather than in the bay.

I haven't gotten anything really interesting done on the wagon. I pulled the factory power steering rack and threw it away. I removed and heavily cleaned the lower rear crossmember from the engine bay and gave it some tattoo's just for the hell of it...

    112.jpg

    113.jpg

I got that back in place and also installed the manual steering rack from a CRX Si. Much quicker ratio than the rt-4wd power steering unit. I did manage to get my right frame rail re-finished, it was pretty shitty looking from where a previous owner had a battery explosion or leak or something. Color match turned out pretty damn good. Then I tagged the frame rail with the cars name. Just something to make the bay look a little different.

    114.jpg

And got carried away and kept going... I will probably wipe this all off and do it again now that I have a better idea of how I want it to look. For the life of me I couldn't get a better picture than this... The silver paint just disappears when the flash hits it. Says Rust in peace if you can't make it out in the pic.

    115.jpg

That's it for now, I'll be doing more mechanical work to get coverage of over the next week or two. Thanks for lookin
  • Whoa whoa whoa... don't take off yet. I have some questions. I know you are going from the rt4wd d-series to a F motor but I wanted to know how hard it was to put that manual steering rack in and if you think it would be a problem with the RT4wd stuff. I want to ditch my PS and use a manual rack, mainly becasue I'm swapping a ZC and PS pump/ brackets are hard to find, but I want less weight, less pull on the motor, and quicker steering... and less mess from leaky PS lines. I haven't yanked my motor out yet to see if there is a difference and I guess you wouldn't know because you were Auto, is the rear motor mount different on manual Rt4wd?s

Your not going to have any issues with it, it's a direct replacement, super easy, out with the old, in with the new. No mods really it's a direct swap.
  • AK_CRXAK_CRX New Wagonist
I guess I can show off a few of my new parts too... Picked up a t3/t4 57 trim
    119.jpg

It's a little bigger turbo than I wanted... But F it. Given the size and location of this turbo I got something to spool it up a little quicker... Picked up a zex dry 50 shot kit for a really good deal. The bottle is from a different kit but who cares. I'll end up putting a kick ass paint job on the bottle before it gets installed...

    120.jpg

And I blacked out my new hasport billet F2d mounts. Raw aluminum just isn't my thing.
    121.jpg

Ok, seriously that's it for now. Thanks for looking.
  • StockStock Wagonist
57 trim sports a pretty shitty compressor wheel design, try and dump it for plain Jane 50 trim, you'll be much happier at pump gas boost levels. I had a 57 trim on my last GSX and the couple 50 trim cars I drive impressed me, and these at 2.0 motors too...
  • AK_CRXAK_CRX New Wagonist
I've seen what 57 trims do on 1.8 LS and LS/vtec motors, I'm pretty sure it's going to work very well with my 2.3

Crapppp. I've looked over your thread a bunch of times and thought you were just messing with wiring. But as I read slowly now. I see you're doing a F2D swap in your RT. Mannn. Thats exactly what I wanted to do if I was able to find a RT later on in life. But looks like everything is moving along and that turbo is gonna suit it nice. I have a F22 motor lying around as well that I plan to throw in my car after I save money to purchase a F2B kit and a lsd cable B16 tranny. But thats way later down tha line for my 2WD. But man let us know how this build turns out, Im very intrigued now. Haha. Looks good so far!
  • AK_CRXAK_CRX New Wagonist
well, wont really be an RT when it's done... I'm all about the fwd.
  • AK_CRXAK_CRX New Wagonist
Damn, it's been awhile! Been busy!!! I finally got the balance shaft delete kit installed into the bottom end, and got the engine into the car for a test fit... I was really surprised how nicely everything seams to fit, I'm really happy with it this far... As I suspected, the extra height of the wagon hood makes clearance a non issue, YAY! I still may have to cut some webbing from underneath, or maybe just shim it up with washers, but for sure better than it was in the CRX... It is a little close to the radiator, I did lose some space up there.... but everything clears. You guys won't believe where I'm putting the turbo.

    194.jpg

    195.jpg

And here's the shot that made my day.... Everything clears the inner structure, no cutting, no hacking...

    196.jpg

The motor is back out of the car now so I could install the clutch and a few etc.. But will be going back in in the next day or two, I'm just waiting on my fabricator friend to get my tensioner pulley bolt shortend.

sweet build. one of the many dreams i have for my wagon.
  • so you quit honda huh you were there for like 5 years or so. you got that badboy in finally. let me know when you get her running wanna come by and check it out. got my crx started and running thanks for the fuel pump. fenders and hood looks good starting to look like a crx what you think about a brown satin or blue? love the green but i dont want to be flawsin yo style. l8
