I cant seem to find it right now. I will look later but d-series trannys can hold a hell of alot. I remember reading in a mag a few years back about a guy running a all motor f22 with a d-series tranny and hitting the 9's. If I remember correct it was a stock tranny with a aftermarket LSD. But what ever you say man.

Wanna sell the wheels to me?

    but were those 4WD trannies?
i know turbo_teg busted his tranny up real good under boost.

willing to drive south for the sale? if so, my buddy wants a wagon, this would be something he would want!
  • skinnyskinny Senior Wagonist
I always figured a tranny was a tranny but I will look into it more. Do you have any idea what the weak spot is?
  • FRITOFRITO New Wagonist
gearsets could be treated, however, the shitty fact that the damn trans is cable driven makes it feel weak when trying to drive aggresively on gravel and tarmac. for daily driving it isn't bad, but the rear end and the gearsets are not built to handle pop-clutch during gravel corner-exit( you know, clutch in, car light and steering input while clutch pop shift weight to rear. Yes, I know that is abuse but most awd vehicle on gravel can withstand this and not feel like you're about to leave the pumpkin on the ground.

Rev-match on tarmac can also be difficult and feels more delayed due to the cable actuated trans. the sloppy feel itself in the cables running to the cabin slow things down too while perf-drive.

What I ended up doing to avoid damage was come in fast, downshift and keep rpm up and left foot brake to weight-transfer while feeding gas to exit...

Of course that then equal faster brake wear.

Are you serious? If that was the case why would honda put cable shifter in all cars now? As for the quick shifting I have no problems and I also have no problems rev matching. Comparing our cars to AWD it just plain silly. There not AWD and they react very differently. I beat on mine everyday and minus the rear diff insulator everything is holding up great. Im only N/A for the moment so I cant say for sure, but with boost you need to drive your car different from a N/A.

WAR: wanna sell me those wheels? I really want a extra set.

i forgot the name of the shop but they did a ef hatch with a rt4wd drive suspension and a d16 turbo putting out about 400hp....and they had made videos of high rev launches on stock tranny and rear end and they even said they were suprised how well it was takin all that power.....i think they have some videos on you tube or something ill try to find the link...it was wicked something tuning ??....i dunno i ran across it one day by accident...

So in your face war wagon  burns dont it LoL I think he is just tired of honda's.

I still want those wheels so mull it over in your head. Also I wanted to know if you still had that intake that you modified with the filter on the top. If you do I will come up to p-town to get it.

The drivetrain is stronger than most people think. We have always had good luck with the strength of cable D-series trannies. The transfer case is driven off the ring gear and all the shafts and 90 degree gears are decent size. Another benefit to the 4WD D series tranny is that it uses a B series size output shaft spline and an intermediate shaft. The driveshafts are comparable in size to some rear wheel drive cars. The rear diff has about a 7" ring gear and has proven to be sturdy. We have also eliminated all bushings and mounted the rear diff and subframe solid. There is no wheel-hop. Another thing to remember is that the viscous coupling softens the shock to the rear drive components.

Trust me, the k20a2 trans I run in my EG is a whole different feeling cable trans than an EF RT4wd... Honda is not trying to build race cars or boosted cars, they're building for the masses daily driven economic cars.

As far as comparison, I'm just talking about aggressive driving in rt4wd or AWD. Just saying which will handle to that type of driving.

Also, is that epic tuning crx still running? you guys talk about a video you see... does the guy daily drive the thing? just because you see a video doesn't mean the thing will last for years and years.

another thing, you guys say the VC takes a lot of shock out? doesn't that then become the new weak point? how often have to rebuild then? lot to think about and some hard to justify. I just know that with those components I wouldn't want to just add more power as a solution at least for the type of drving I was doing with it.

What kind of driving are you doing skinny? Trackdays? Rallycross? Daily backroad? Or are you just driving to the store and to work?

    thanks

Im driving the thing like a raped goat. 2-5K launches, hard acceleration, quick stops, lots of rev matching, off-roading every chance I get. hell the poor thing has even seen 110mph a few times  When I get a few more things replaced it will be a track slut on the weekend for auto cross, hill climbs, and drag racing.

Im sure just like everything else that things will break and thats to be expected. I just had to throw it out there cause he said it couldnt and it sure as hell can and other people have proven it time and time again.

im pretty sure one of the guys from epic tuning had a posting on here asking about rebuilding the rt4wd tranny not to long ago. and no i don't wanna sell the wheels sorry
  • skinnyskinny Senior Wagonist
    what about your old intake?

What is your asking price for the wagon?

well, with things breaking, do you guys know what yards may have some supply of rear ends, driveshafts, and transmission?

I have been looking for a friend but haven't had much luck. keep finding fwd wagons.

On another note, Simon Levear? I think he owns the red EF hatch that ran Open class in Oregon trail a couple years. Is he on this forum? I'd like to hear from someone who has proven it time and time again... May be some good solid input on what parts to worry about.

*don't mean to drift off so much, good luck with the sale of the wagon. turned out well.
