USDM

The USDM Wagon was badged as either "Wagovan" or "Civic Wagon" depending on trim. It is left hand drive and was the only market to come with 'decapitator' belts (from 90-91).
Real quick on some of these questions....

I am a dealer parts guy and these are the answers for sure for USDM cars:
88-89 were years for WAGOVAN trim level. It is the only one with factory 'jail bars'. They were to secure cargo and protect the windows from cargo. The wagovan difference was the vinyl seats and one-peice rear seat and door panels without cloth. Plus the bars and a WAGOVAN sticket where the RT4wd sticker goes. The rest is the same as DX.

The under-seat box was 88-89 RT4wd only. The 90-91 seat pans were different because of the motor mouse seat belts. The safety changes for 90-91 were the elimination of TWO left side dash pockets and the underseat tray. They added SRS elegible seatbelts, rear door beams (so the doors are technically different, but not visibly) lower dash knee bolster and new glove box lid (also a knee bolster) and the dash is different, most noticible around the gauge cluster and where the switches are. The exterior was changed in the marker lights (88-89 screws, 90-91 no screws). Colors were changed between years. Engines were unchanged as were PGM FI options (2wd had 1.5 liter dual point (aka throttle body) injection, and the 4wd had MPFI 1.6 liter).

Passenger Mirror, A/C, Stereos, Speaker Pods, 2WD rear mud flaps, Door Visors, Audio Consoles, Antenna, Floormats, etc. were ALL OPTIONS! No cars had these from the factory! They are like Honda always does: DEALER INSTALLED ACCESSORIES.

4WD wagon is DX trim! only addition is MPFI 1.6, RT4wd, and Power Steering (also on DX 2wd automatic models). Nothing else is different between the two except year related differences like under seat tray.

Rear suspension is different on 1988 models.

I have a 1991 Civic wagon brochure and Service Manual, Body Manual and ETM if someone has more specific questions. I also have the US accessory listing pages and an 88-91 Civic Wagon paper parts catalog (what we used before we had online catalogs {used at dealers as only way to look stuff up until the mid 90's, oh how far we've come!})

Haydz, thanks for this link ...

Does anyone know what the letters and numbers mean for the Chassis Code?
Just trying to confirm that the wagon I have is the base model.
    Here's what I got:
    5 spd. FWD
    Vinyl seats f/r
Bench seats in the rear (not the 40/60)
    No PS, PW or AC

I am pretty sure I have the JDM Civic Shuttle 55X, but whats the difference between the JDM CS 55X and CS 53U (besides the CS 53U being 5mt or 4at)?
  • HaydzHaydz Moderator
Nope, sounds like you have a Civic Pro. Civic Pro was the name they gave to the JDM version of the Wagovan (the base trim). The Civic Pro usually has an EY2 Chassis code and either a 1.3 or 1.5L motor. Always carburettored.

    The 55X and 53U have different chassis - the 55X is an EF2 and the 53U is an EF1. The 53U also sports a D13B (1.3L motor).

Here is a quick rundown of what i know about JDM chassis codes...

EF1: Base model Civic (Hatch, Shuttle & Sedan). Comes with a 1.3L carbie'd D13B. Always FWD.
EF2: Most common model of Civic (Hatch, Shuttle and Sedan). Usually came with a 1.5L dual carbie'd D15B4. Always FWD.
EF3: Middle of the road (Hatch, Shuttle & Sedan). Came with either SOHC ZC or DOHC ZC. Always FWD. Optional A.L.B and L.S.D
    EF4: Most common models with RT4WD (Shuttle & Sedan). Came with D15B4 dual carbie'd 1.5L. Always RT4WD.
EF5: Flagship RT4WD model (Shuttle & Sedan). Came with SOHC ZC. Always RT4WD. Optional A.L.B and L.S.D
EF6: Base model CRX. Came with D15B4 1.5L dual carbie. Always FWD.
EF7: Most common model of CRX. Came with DOHC ZC. Always FWD. Optional A.L.B and L.S.D
EF8: Flagship model CRX. Came with B16A. Always FWD. Optional A.L.B and L.S.D
EF9: Flagship model Civic. Came with B16A. Always FWD. Optional A.L.B and L.S.D

    What's the difference between a EE2 and EY2?

I've got an 89, but any time I've punched that year in, I don't get the Wagovan option, only the DX. So, I guess the real question is what's the difference between a DX and a Wagovan?
  • wagodizzlewagodizzle Council Member and EDM expert
    EE2 = DX wagon
    EY2(or 3??)= Wagovan

Wagovan = base model with vinyl seats, no clock, no folding bench seat, etc.
DX = "deluxe" model with cloth seats, split folding bench w/ headrests, clock, etc....

4th gen wagovans were only made from 88-89.
  • RockVegasRockVegas New Wagonist
    Gotcha!

So, the DX used to be the premium model. Hmmm.... that changed, lol

I've been told that ALL of the AC systems on 4th gen. Civics were dealer installed. I've not seen a wagon without AC, but I'm sure a few exist. I have seen a couple of standard hatches without.
