  • Tools required for installation
    - 10mm wrench
    - 14mm socket
    - 17mm socket
    - Angle grinder with cutting wheel

Cut the "ears" off the DA knuckle heat shields if you choose to keep them which i do

    225.jpg

    226.jpg

Install DA knuckle and reinstall the castle nuts back on the UCA, Tierod end, and LCA.

    227.jpg

Install 11" Mini Cooper rotor (i put lugs on to keep the rotor in place while installing the caliper)

*Goes to wash hands before handling Spoon caliper because I'm not a vagina that wears gloves LOL*

So for this setup you must copy the ITR setup with the Spoon calipers (washers go between supplied spoon bolt and knuckle as pictured)

Reinstall brake line with 14mm socket

So the pads i originally went with (S2000 pads) were too small so i grabbed a set of carbon ceramic ITR pads today and the fit PERFECT! You only have to do ONE minor adjustment on the pads to make them fit.

    Pad Installation

    Tools required
    - 10mm wrench
    - Allen Key set
    - Angle grinder with cutting wheel
    - Vice

Two pads come with the mounting bracket/low pad sensor built in, that needs to be cut off to fit inside the Spoon caliper. i used my angle grinder with the cutting wheel and put the pad inside the vice to cut it off..

    237.jpg

I bent the sensor up so it wasn't in my way when i cut the bracket off

    238.jpg

cut as close as possible to the pad as you can

    239.jpg

To open the topside of the caliper up you need to loosen the locking nut off the allen key bolt

    240.jpg

Then loosen the allen key bolt

    241.jpg

then take the locking nut off the allen key bolt and take out the allen key bolt and slide the collar out of the caliper; repeat for the other collar

    242.jpg

    243.jpg

    244.jpg

Once this is done your pads will slide right in.(i used the pad with the cut bracket on the outside)

    245.jpg

    246.jpg

You can reinstall your collars, allen key bolt, and locking nut

    247.jpg

Tighten the allen key nut snug then tighten the locking nut snug, once they're both snug tighten the allen key bolt down first then the locking nut; repeat for other collar

also a key note.. they way i installed the calipers in the pictures was the wrong way, i wanted to keep the bleed nipple down to keep from getting brake fluid on the caliper but the bleed nipple must be upwards ( DO NOT GET BRAKE FLUID ON THE CALIPERS IT WILL PULL THE ANODIZED BLUE OFF, USE A CLEAR VACCUM LINE TO BLEED THE BRAKES )
  • Nice work, almost makes me wish I'd gone with some bigger RPF1 than the 15"

It would be really awesome if you could get some replacement decals for the Volks that matched the spoon blue.

Either way, nice guide, thank you!
  • A good & easy to follow write-up. Well done!
  • Hot brakes and great writeup, thanks for taking the time.

thanks :) just trying to help out the Wagon community and not have to hunt for days like i did lol

i have also seen that guys are doing ITR BBK upgrades the same way.. as well as legend two pot upgrades
  • UPDATED!!!!!

ITR pads work perfect!!! will do a write up process of bleeding later, i want to source some good clear vacuum lines so i can put them on the bleed nipples so brake fluid doesn't get on the caliper (i was told do not get brake fluid on the calipers because it will pull the anodized paint off the caliper)
  • klumklum Senior Wagonist
can i ask... ball park figure for this sexiness?
  • Great job on the write up Brian and consolidating all this information.
  • Thanks! This looks like something I want to try. Where did you get the spoon calipers? I cant find any online.
  • i got mine from a local Spoon dealer but they can easily be found online.. HMO had a set not too long ago that were used but in good condition also there are a few Spoon dealers online.. ICB is one of them (jdmland.com) as well as gaijin garage (gaijin-garage.com)
