want to swap in a jdm zc sohc, non-vtec, dual-carb engine into my d15b...

Hey, and please forgive the ignorance in advance!
I bought a jdm zc sohc, non-vtec, dual-carbed engine to swap into my 91 dx (d15b) auto.
From what I gather from research, it's just a d16a with different cam.
Could i use the current dpfi intake, dizzy, and ecu for the time being until i gather the mpfi, ecu and dizzy from a d16a?
Any issues with the d15b auto tranny?
What's funny is that the engine was advertised as a d15b/zc engine... so I thought I was good to go until I did some research after the fact
and found it was actually a d16a engine.
d'oh!
Thanks,
Dave

Yes, you can use your current intake, distributor etc. no issues with the transmission either, so long as you keep the current ECU. You may have to fab a blockoff plate for the fuel pump hole at the right rear corner of the head.

The trick will be in finding the OBD0 MPFI auto trans ECU. (PS9 I think?) And the required throttle body cam/bracket/cable parts for the trans. detent cable.

I picked up an auto... I've got a complete MPFI swap I'm gathering info on.

Why would the throttle body be different? Cam/bracket/cable? You just talking for throttle?

    thanks

ZC was never carbed, so you have yourself a D15 as Im pretty sure all carbed Civics are 1500cc, the 1600cc are the SOHC ZC injected ones
  • Thanks Bam, I forgot about the mechanical fuel pump... "like a hole in the head"... :)
I'm going MPFI eventually, so this is good to know... and I'll have some more questions I'm sure...

Hey Charb...I'll be going MPFI down the line, so I'm interested in this answer as well!
I've got the engine and the time right now, without the mpfi stuff... but I'd subscribe to your swap once you start for sure!!!!!

Hey NZ... I'm not lyin' I swear, it's stamped ZC right on the block, and a dual carbed fuel pumped system(although mangled) is still attached to the engine!!!!
    :)
I'm gonna change the various components, including the timing belt, so I will know for sure whether it's a 1.6 or 1.5.
I'll be sure to document the process.

I have seen a ZC with a fuel pump hole in the head myself. Granted, that was in a junkyard and may have been a Frankenstein.

The throttle body itself is probably not different for an automatic, just will have the extra cam and a bracket for the trans. Cable. If I understand correctly, the ECU only controls converter lockup for the fourth 'gear'. Shift points, modulation, kickdown etc. are dependent on that cable.
  • Yeah, there's mention of that block off plate for those who've used the carbed zc.
And, I'll keep eyes open for an auto si or ex around here to grab the requisite parts from for that dpfi auto to mpfi auto swap...
    thanks again :encouragement:
Also, pm me your details so I can get that rear arch payment out to you ASAP!!!!

I've seen more than one. I've got one on my parts rack right now. Came in an RT my friend bought, rod went through the block and he gave me the head for helping.

Thanks for the insight. A credible person told me the ECU's on the 91's were independent and the trannys have their own CPU. Haven't found much info on anyone doing the swap. I'm kinda digging the auto driving around town, especially downtown.

First one I've ever seen... thankfully I have smart friends :)
  • Hey Charb, is that the famous block off plate for the mechanical fuel pump hole in head?
If someone I know wanted to purchase a block off plate 'similar' to the one you have pictured, would you happen to know someone selling one?

And I have to agree, I daily commute my with my auto dx in silly traffic and the automatic tranny makes it almost bearable, almost!!!

This is the first I've ever seen...

Make friends with with a machinist if you're not already. Something like this would be quite easy to make.
  • Thanks for the link Grifty!

Agreed, a machinist friend is a good friend to have!!!
