L3 vs S22 RT4WD Transmission differences

So I managed to pickup a Hydraulic S22 4wd trans from a EK5 locally.

I'll be posting up the differences and similarities between them as I pull it apart and inspect it further. Figured this would be good info for some people going this route.

My plan with this box is to reuse the existing rear half of the case and swap the L3 front half of the case onto it.

Shifting on the S22 box feels alot more smoother, it doesnt have the notchey L3 feel and selects gears with ease.

First of all the S22 does not have SL

Tailshaft flanges - These arent the same

S22 does not have a selector for 4WD-FWD, also notice the electric VSS

S22 - You can use the L3 side transmission mount as the bolt holes are threaded

S22 - the clutch cable holder fits perfect onto the S22

The shifters side by side, the S22 has more of a bend

The S22 shift cable has a different firewall grommet

Transfer cases look the same

The L3 shafts fit perfectly fine

S22 half shaft, this is quiet different. I've never seen a half shaft on a d series like this

I'd like to see the LHS drive shaft comparison.
Also, the intermediate shaft is normal on RT4WD and also fuel injected EFs.

Are you going to pull them apart and compare the gears?? I am dying to know if they are they are interchangeable since Honda Japan still sells rebuild parts for the newer s22 boxes.

Yep I will be pulling them apart and comparing, hopefully within the next week or two!

Will get some more pics within the next few days showing more differences

Awesome!! You are the shit man!

Were you still looking for a rt shifter assembly? There's a 4wd wago sitting in a yard by me that I pulled a spare tranny and driveshaft from. It still has it if you want
