rt4wd auto trans no 4wd? help

I switched the switch on the trans, but still don't feel the 4wd is working correctly. Any help?

  • Not sure if the official Honda test applies to an auto, but it goes like this:
Jack the car up with all 4 wheels off the ground, start the engine and put the car in gear. Apply the e-brake, the engine should die. If not, the viscous coupler is bad.

As I said, I'm not sure if that works with an auto. I also don't know if there is some internal aspect of the auto trans that might prevent transmission of power to the rear. The VC is not an all-or-nothing device, it can be transmitting some torque without achieving full lock-up. Mine was like that, performing the test, the engine would bog down then recover. It wouldn't get me up my driveway when snow-covered. After rebuilding, it works perfectly.

Thanks for the reply! I'll try that out this weekend. How hard was it to rebuild the vc?
  • It's a bit of a process, but not rocket science. Check this stuff out.

However, STE Couplers is now rebuilding them for about $200
