Testing thermovalves? '87 rt4wd

I've been following a bogging problem at highway speeds with my '87 rt4wd wagon, and conclude that it is one or more of the thermovalves to blame. I'd like to test each of them, but don't want to take them out of the intake manifold if it isn't required. Does anyone have an idea as to how I could test the thermovalves while they're still threaded into the manifold? The original Honda manual doesn't give a procedure or even a hint as to how I should accomplish this task. I'm also wondering if anyone has also had to do this on theirs or anyone else's late 80's civics. Thanks.

haven't messed with mine enough to know about the thermovalves but I did empty out my CAT and DAAYUUM the thing ran like a raped ape! Engine had been burning oil long enough that the CAT just got clogged. I'll check on Alldata at work tomorrow.
