1991 lift gate Struts

Hello,
My Wife and I have a 91' with rear wiper. The struts recently went out on it and we replaced with OEM. They did not support the lift gate. We got a second set that are supposed to be sturdier, they would not support the gate in the open position either. I am wondering if there are any struts out there that are heavier duty and will fit in the Wagovan lift gate?

i used a set of monroe lift supports from summit racing. part # mon-901136 about $21.00 each.
they hold up my hatch fine, i dont even have to push the hatch up all the way.
