Wacky Wednesday (VA)

There is a local event every Wednesday called "Wacky Wednesday" where anyone with a street legal car, DOT approved helmet, and $15 can race around the track. I've just started recently
and have gone only three time so far. You first go out individually and get two time attack laps at a running start. After everyone has gone, you race eachother and get placed in A-main (winners) or B-main (losers).

My first time out I got a 27.8 then a 27.5
Second time out I got a 24.5 then a 24.3
My third time out I got a 23.8 then a 23.5

(All lap time are in seconds.)

The really fast cars get 18 or 19 second laps. I attached a link to the website and it has a video showing some of the cars that show up and I also put in some pictures of me going around.
Oh! I also am attaching my "Members Mini Gallery" link to show my setup thus far and seeing if anyone has any input to help and I guess just a general discussion.

Here we go!

Thanks for the idea.... I am going to recommend this to our local track...

No problem, good luck. It's loads of fun!

ALRIGHT! Got a new personal best of 22.870 and then 22.613. Only because I took a friends advice and didn't apply the brakes going into the turns... just because the Wagon isn't fast enough to need to. And then I won against an EK sedan with a poor mans Type-R. I almost pooped myself when I saw what was under the hood before we raced. Susprised myself when I won though. Spun wheels at the launch and he took off and then snatched 2nd. The I caught him heading out of turn two and from there I had him.

Here we are at the start.

    155.jpg

This is going into turn 3

    155.jpg

And here we both are going through 3 and 4 towards the finish line.

Okay, new personal best of 22.6 and then going into turn two the rear end started getting loose, I hit the brakes (should have gassed it more, I just didn't know how to react in that situation) and ended up with a 23 second lap. Not too bad for loosing it a little. I raced the Gravedigger looing Accord again without a handicap and he beat me by about a fender. I really should be beating him based on the setup of our cars, but he is seaoned way more than I am. 4 or 5 seasons. I was placed in the B-main and whooped this old Ford Taurus. (See below)

    343.jpg

Then I was put up against this Scirocco. Later I found out this asshole sandbags the crap out of his car and should really be placed in Top Dog. He has gotten a 19 second time trial before so what the hell is he doing in B-main!? Anyways I knew I was going to loose. This guy wasn't even full throttle the whole time, and it looks like he is waiting for me in the turns. Anyways, he won B-main and blah blah blah..... I dont like him. Whatever.

And if you are reading this, please post. I'm tired of talking to myself.

^^^ pretty common on this forum, at least in my threads. Ive pretty much stopped posting in here due to lack of any intrest. seems like if its not "stanced" of "hellaflush" no one here really cares, lol.

BUT, thats cool as hell to see other places doing stuff like youve got going on, that kind of shit is fun. I miss these kind of events. lots and lots of fun. only way to do this here is to enter the spectater drags at the local speedway during intermissions maybe once or twice a summer and I always seem to be out of town when they happen. looks like you guys get a great turnout!

we used to do events similar to this around here years ago. They called them the fast and furious events. 4 part deals. show and shine, autox, (where they would put 5-6 cones around the oval and you had to slalom them, turn around and hotlap back), a burnout comp, then the head to head oval drags. each event was worth points, person with highest points at the end of the night won the event overall. later events took out the burnout comp and just did hotlap time trials for times only. I actually won damn near every one overall cept maybe 2. there were cash prizes and trophies for each portion of the event and a big trophy for overall winers. they quit doing them due to lack of participants. we have a lot of posers around here :(

another cool thing we have close (2 hours away basically) are our local grip/drift events. A little track opens up for us once a month and the local drift guys put these on. basically its an open track for 45 minute sessions. every other session is grip, then drift, back and fourth till people are either out of energy or tires, lol. really cool events. super laid back.

heres a vid from one of the sessions:

Very true about the lack of interest. I like the look of a car that can function. This is my first season trying this and I was addicted the first time I went out. The turnout actually wasn't as great as usual. Only 26 cars and thats half of what usually comes out. I guess the forcast was looking a little sketchy and the fact that we didn't have it on July 4th.

The F&F competition sounds fun. We had a burnout competition last night, but I never want to take part in that. There are plaques for most consistent lap times every night. Thats something I think I could win. Ultimate dream is winning B-main. I really think I could have won it last night if that damn Scirocco wasn't there. EVERYONE knows he sandbags.

And one thing I do want to go and try is VIR (Virginia International Raceway) See if you cant pull up a video on youtube. I can't because I'm on the school computers during break right now.

what all is done to your car? you mess with tire pressures, have a rear swaybar or use sticker tires?

I normally run 32PSI all the way around, but for Wacky I put 38PSI on the right side. As for tires and wheels.... sadly no. I need some more money rolling in. I am going to get a Koni Yellow and GC setup as my next big purchase soon though. I just got a steering rack in today that will hopefully solve my front end clunking and slop in the steering. I also want to play with the camber a bit to help taking the corners.

nice, some solid mods. be carefull adding to much camber for outside. its a fine line and easy to get to much and lose contact patch. if you really wanna dial it in, get a pyrometer and measure temps in at least 3 spots on tire immediatly after a few hot laps. check outside, middle, and inside. if its hoter on outside of tire, you need more camber, cooler on outside and you need less etc.

I also wouldnt go with like a hoosier or a kumho tire for those events. Id be looking at a nitto/toyo 100 treadwear tire (555R, 888, NT-01 etc), or get a set of R1R's in a 195-50-15. those things are badass street tires. So much so that particular size is being scrutinized by the scca and will be illigal to use in ST classes next season, lol.

some konis would be a good addition to the car though. i love mine. a little on the stiff side for dd, but for autox, and lapping days, they work really well.

Don't take lack of words as lack of interest - from me at least. I read most of what is posted on this forum but usually don't take the time to respond. I'll try to do better, we don't need to wither and die here!

I'm glad we don't have events like this near me. I don't need another project!

I have felt the tires after my time attacks and the outside if way hotter than the inside. Just because I have the factory spec alignment. And for tires I was looking at the Bridgestone RE-11's, but I wanted something that would last longer and found the Falken Ziex ZE-912. I am looking to get a 205/50/15 with the 949 Racing 6UL wheels in a 15x8 +36 offset. I think that would hold the Wagon down.

I also need to loosen the rear sway bar because the ass end is getting loose through the turns. If I do that then I could get a faster entry into the turn and exit. I really want to break into the 21 second range. And I wonder if I could ever get into the 20's? I am going to call redshiftmotorsports and talk about spring rates for the Koni/GC setup.

Yea, I know. I just see the views go up and then the comments never come in. And I know if you had something like this near you, you would tear it up! Why not bring Goldie and run some cars over in the process!? haha
  • GR33KGR33K Wagonist
Well, no pictures or videos. I did get a personal best my first lap then beat it on my second lap for time attacks.

First time being 22.267 and then the new personal best in the Wagon is....... (drum-role please)

    21.706 WOOT WOOT!

    Congratulations!
  • GR33KGR33K Wagonist
Thank you. It started to get loose in the rear going through turn two on the second lap, but I just added more gas and the Wagon straightened out. I think this might be the peak for this car in its current state. Wish I was faster in the 1on1's, but it sure is a great momentum car!
  • shenrieshenrie Council Member
racing is 90% driver, 5% car, and 5% tires. theres always improvement for driver mod ;)

congrats on the new top time, but never assume thats as fast as it will go.

I dunno if you can see the line painted on the track in the vid I posted, but apparently its "thee line". Ive tried numorous different variations of that line and none of them produced the times when I followed it as close as possible. spned some time in the stands and focus on those that put down better times that you. study thier lines and try to replicate.
  • GR33KGR33K Wagonist
Good advice as usual. Thanks. I was looking last night at some of the top dog guys trying to see what lines they take, but its difficult to see from the pits. I know that next week I want to try my hand at B-main again. I feel like I really could win it!

i think i might like to come down one wednesday and watch ... Scrappy isnt set up for this ... :(

Shenrie : i have to say ditto to what Bam said .. i read almost all the posts except Stance and HellaFlush.... i enjoyed the videos you posted of your mud covered events....

Bam : im sure u will get something started down there soon enough on a new project since Goldie is almost complete & HellaFunctional

I gotta admit I sat with a shit-eating grin the whole time watching the video of your lil wagon pull around that track. I was totally routing for you lol. The camera always makes things look a lot slower I know, but it's cool to see you consistently getting better and better lap times. I have been lurking on this thread without saying anything and I'm sure there are many others that do the same so don't think no one is watching. BTW I also enjoyed that video by Shenrie. I really wanted you to catch that ?CRV?

Heck, you could enter Scrappy and just do the time-attacks for fun. There is a huge diesel truck that comes out and throwns down 21 or 22 second laps!

I want to get a Go-Pro and film from inside the Wagon. Its so totally different between watching and experiencing. And yea, the camera moving with the Wagon does make it slow, but Im going 70MPH in the straights and maybe 60MPH in the turns. I had a chance to do a quick glance at the speedometer in the back straight last Wednesday. I really want to get some better wheels and tires and go out and try some different courses and see what turning right would feel like on a course.

Lol, I could have passed him pretty easily, but he asked me to get some footage of him driving. He was trying to sort the suspension and wanted to get a look at it and what it was doing in various spots. You can see him pull over to let me by a few times, but I knew he would eventually press the issue hard enough in that spot to where I would get some good footage...Im a dick sometimes :D track protocall is exit high after infield to let faster cars by. thats why you see me get passed in the same spot by all the faster cars. and ya, its a crv with a gsr swap.

and thanks for the heads up gents. I post up vids in a few places and rarely get much responce. just kinda figured people wernt interested with so little feedback. Maybe Ill just do a vid thread in this section instead of various ones per event id been doing.

x2 on footage. looks super slow from the out of car standpoint...inside it feels like your warping time lol. especially in these old rattleboxes.

Alright, long time no update. 3 or 4 weeks ago I actually got into the finals for B-main and lost to a red Civic EG sedan. Really cool guy too. Found out he has been racing there for 11 years! Funny too that two little Civics with D series engines made it into the finals.

Next night I got shut out. Wasn't too happy about that.

    Week after got rained out.

This last time I lost against a B16A block B16B head and cable tranny EF sedan in the 1 on 1s. (he later went onto the finals for A-main. I was told even though I lost I outdrove him in the corners because he killed the launch and I still have yet to get that down. Then I went against a B series EG hatch and he killed me on the launch and I was playing catchup the whole way until turn 3 and 4 where I passed him there for the win. After that race I was put up against my friends monster of a Civic. Im not going to release facts about this because I dont know if he would want me too, but just trust me when I say its FAST! I knew I was going to lose, so why not make it more interesting and fun for the crowd?

    Enjoy!

I'm getting new wheels and tires for the coming up season. Also, I am getting a Go-pro for a Christmas/birthday
present so that will be great getting footage from inside the Wagon. I'm hoping to make some cool videos with it too!
