Not if you don't hang it down too far, I just kept and eye on the neck and the fuel lines. The filler neck is relatively easy to disconnect though. Once you get under there you may just decide to pull the tank all the way off. That wouldn't be a bad idea because the cause of my fuel pump going out was tons of rust in the tank. So if you take the tank off, or just use a telescoping mirror to see if there is rust, then you will know if you should take the tank out of the parts car too. Actually.... When you take out the drain plug on your tank, see if the gas is really rust colored. If you drain the whole tank you will see if any rusty sludge comes out after the last bit of gas. If the gas looks like iced tea with orange Gatorade in it, or rusty sludge comes out - just go ahead and swap the whole tank. As long as the donor tank doesn't have a bunch of rust in it! Make sure to still pull the pump to check the sock filter if you're going to swap the whole tank over.

Good timing with the question, i just went through this ordeal a few weeks ago so it's still fresh in my mind.
  • I'm glad to have you as a resource, your support means a lot.
I hate pulling the tank completely or draining the tank because it's a full tank or really close to it, i don't think i have a container big enough for 10 gallons of gas and that thing will be heavy to remove but i think i might pull it anyway just to inspect like you said.
The tank in the parts car is empty i believe so i'm gonna do it first which should give me an idea of how its done.
I know people like to site "use the search function" or "google" but could you help me find an oem pump for a simliar price to this one???

don't worry about looking up the new pump until i verify the parts car pumps condition.

    thx again

    Rockauto.com
    partsgeek.com
    amazon.com
    eBay.com

just search something like "90 civic fuel pump" without the quotes, in google. Then click shopping and sort by price, keep going up in page numbers until the price gets high enough and you'll start seeing fuel pumps. Some places may say that there is a specific one for the wagons, but the only difference is the fuel pump housing (the angle it sits in the tank), so as long as you're just going for just a pump replacement it doesn't matter if it's not wagon specific.

Right now rock auto has a wholesaler closeout deal on beck/arnley fuel pumps, they are $45. It comes without a strainer, you could reuse one of the old ones by cleaning it out with fresh gas, as long as the plastic frame inside the sock isn't broken. If the little frame is broken it will cause the filter to pancake and collapse on itself, effectively choking it out. You can get a new strainer from rock auto on closeout for $7, or you can get one from your local auto parts store for around $20.

About the same price, and it's from a reputable manufacturer. The next step up is a Bosch replacement for $115. I think it's worth the extra money if you have it, Bosch pioneered the fuel injection revolution.
  • thank you for doing the search, i am really thankful for your help.
my wife is gonna put the kids to bed this evening herself so i can work on pulling the tank off the parts car wagon.
if all goes well, i'll either have a running car by tomorrow or i'll know the pump is bad in the parts wagon.
if it's bad i'll order the new pump you mentioned.
i would so love for my wagon to run.
the temp tag has run out and i didn't even get to drive it a week.

    Good luck!
  • No go on pulling the old pump out of the parts wagon last night.
My wife was much more in favor of buying a new one then reusing the old one which could just give out again in short order.
Anyway, i'm on the net right now ordering one, just trying to pick, right now it looks like i'm going with the one you mentioned form rockauto they were running a special on and going ahead and getting a bosch strainer, grand total shipped $69.74 not bad at all.
Thanks again, I'll keep you updated

Cool, it's always nice to use new stuff! I just bought a d16a6 td02 distributor from rockauto for $98 shipped on closeout. It's a remanufactured beck/arnely part, but it goes for $250 online elsewhere, so I'm happy. Either way it will be way newer than the BROKEN one I have sitting all taken apart in my shop right now. The bastard heated up because the bearing was failing, and it melted the glue on the coils around the magnetic sensor pickups, and they were just rattling around!

  • no codes at all
  • FIXED!
    Got the pump from rockauto.com!
    Great site!
Installed it last night and she runs just wonderfully!
Thanks to everyone, special thx to udubrx7.
Also wanted to mention it was way easier than i thought it would be, my but wagon had two access places under the rear seats!
Opened the one closest to the door and low and behold there she was!
    What a great day!
  • Gotta love Honda !
