Yes, there is a sack of desiccant in the dryer that traps moisture, but that moisture can no more exist in a vacuum than any other bit of water, right? If you you keep the system in a deep vacuum long enough, the dryer will give up its water.
IF the dryer is restricted (it is a filter as well) then it must be replaced. Also, if the desiccant bag has ruptured (gray gritty silica downstream) replace it. Or if the compressor grenaded (debris upstream)
I'm not saying that a new part isn't the best thing, it's just not the ONLY thing. If it was a paying customer's car? Damn right it must have a new one, you can't have it coming back on you, right?
