Broody's 87 wagon

Hi, nothing really special about my wagon but there aren't many gen 3 so I post up. It's a RT-4wd 1987 wagon, bought it maybe 4 months ago, didn't have much time for it before Christmas. Body has around 270 000km, engine 228 000, everything is stock. It came with a crappy looking (oem) paint, I was sad about loosing all these 80's stickers and little red lines but I finaly painted it gloss black with a gallon of tremclad anti rust paint (40 bucks), fixed a few things (rears brakes, front cv joints) and bought some good studded tires and wheels.
I don't plan to lower it or make anything, no cash to put in this (and 3rd gen mod parts are hard to find) and I wan't it able to make some offroad. It's mostly a winter beater and an ice lapping car.

Pic just a bit after I got it, wasn't that bad actually, though it was worst (the fact that it's clean helps).

Was my second time, with nokian tires this thing was doing great, I was passing most of the audi/subaru guys in my group (their 2nd time too for most), just some lack of power in the straight and need to downshift all the time to keep in the revs, maybe I'll be looking for some engine mods this summer or the one after.

I'll try to make pics when it will be clean (won't happen before spring probably  ) and the interior. They put a lot of salt/calcium here in Quebec, hopefully, the car was in western Canada for most of it's life, at least that what the ex owner told me, and I guess it's possible as the floor and body was decent, while many 15 years old civic have big holes in the body.

So I'm happy with the car even if I got some little troubles now it runs strong, and also probably a justy would have been better for ice track (and coming from a geo metro I love 3 cylinders) but I didn't find any that wasn't to much rusted, and the wagon is great for the room/versatility and the plastic trim isn't so cheap (noisy car though).

  • Cool...looks like a good beater/ice racer. I bet that ice racing is fun stuff! Any videos??

no vid except for a small drift I think. Next time I'll try to get the camera and fix it somewhere. I guess some good tape will make it, ice lapping doesn't make nearly as much G forces as summer lapping.
  • That wagon just plain kicks ass  .

Thanks for comments, but what are tingles?
I'll take pics when the car will be clean, on the track most of the times some people take pictures and upload them, I just need to fix my camera somewhere to film the laps.

i only wish we had snow up here.. looks hella fun...

To be honest there isn't much snow, I was excpecting more, as I was ready with my nokian tires and my 4wd, compared to last winter with my geo metro and cheap tires (saw it today for the first time sicne I sold it, nostalgia  )

Also, I just snapped my alternator belt tonight :(
Not a big issue at least but still not fun, it's the same belt on 4wd wagon than any carbed 1.5 civic?

Hi, I just snapped a pic of my car tonight, it's not really clean yet (I just leave the rain clean it) but better than before, lost the nice winter rims though. My 100$ paint still looks allright after the winter I'm glad, but I shouls have put more layers at least on the rear fenders (or some grease).

I'll probably give 2-3 more layers at the end of the summer and try to fixe the dents and rust with rust converter and bondo/body filler.
Also will golf mk2 fit on the car? I bought some for 10$ (the ugly things in the trunk), I don't have wheels for my summer tires yet (I have 2 sets of winter tires, studded for ice lapping and the cheap studless that came with the car for DD, the ones on the car now). It's supposed to be the same bolt pattern an 1mm bigger center bore.

32/36 Webber DGV will add some serious power. Had it done to my old 1st gen crx with no cat and a full exhaust kit OOOOHWEEEEE! It really was a big jump.

Apparently the (free) mods listed in the big post on that topic will make the car almost as quick as with the webber
    http://www.redpepperracing.com/forums/i ... 2926&st=15
Also I have a cdm (non cvcc) carb and apparently the webber is hard to tune well, plus not really cheap. Only thing I don't like with the stock carb is that I had some problems (sounds like flooding carb) and there are no rebuild kits for the cdm carb as far as I know. also I will check if I have a cat, not sure the canadian ones had it.
But I'll try the little mods on stock carb first to see how it feels. With some more hp and more low end power/torque I sure would be happy, and stay competitive in ice lapping.

I just bought old acura integra wheels, painted black (crappy paint but I don't care much), black on black should be fine.

    roues.jpg

14 inches on my wagon is a bit too big imo (especially with 185 wide tires), I wanted honda civic vx wheels instead, but for 60$ I couldn't let these pass.

I could maybe use the sandblasting machien at my sister school to make a new paint, but I'll probably make my watanabe rs8 wheels (for my mr2) instead.

Also I didn't see many advantages for the 3g wagon over the 4g, but I saw the weight of the 4g 4wd, it'S about 2500 vs 2200 for mine (1000kg vs 1120 or so), the weight is significant still, on ice lapping especially, where stiffness and power aren't really a concern, the 3g must perform at least as well. I'd love to put a d16a1 engine (bolt on on the tranny, but hassle for fuel injection conversion), but I'm not mechanially inclined (plus I would need to find a donor car).

Two guys filmed a lapping session last winter with their camera but they didn't uploaded them. I'll ask them for the vid this summer, I'll probably see them a few times at the summer lapping events (with my mr2, not my civic).
Actually I'd like to try my civic at auto-x, but I'm a bit affraid to end up upside down on the roof, especially with "big" 185-60-14 tires.

I finally found the wire for the camera. So here is the car with the wheels. The car isn't working properly right now however. But it should be fine soon.

I should put back the honda emblem too, once a day a guy asked me if it was a tercel (still okay), and another a lada...
