Minimoto's 1989 wagovan

d15b2 FWD 5spd

i picked her up for $550, runs good, burns some oil in the number 2 and 4 cylinders. 251k when i bought it(3/16/2011). going to DD it until the motor dies, then swap in a d16.
i may make a custom subwoofer enclosure and amp rack that goes in the spare tire area, and mounts flush so i don't loose any cargo area

all i did was shorted the ground wires and repaint the battery terminal cover

my goal is to keep it mostly clean looking and only use OEM engine part, i may lower it an inch or so. depending how well putting in a rear sway bar works

Looks good, first time I seen a wagovan in tan. I always see them in white or blue, with blue interior.
    Good, clean pickup.

find a better way to do that ground. looks a little rough how it is right now. I'm sure you could ifnd a cleaner way to install it rather than stretched over to the valve cover. Same thing with the speakers in the back. tuck those wires away instead of leving them just hanging all over the place. It'll make everything just look neat and tidy. Clean car over all though. Nice pick up for $550. Just remember, keep it clean, lol.
  • yup, i was thinking i could move that ground down onto the transmission somewhere, that's how those speaker wires were when i got, when my brother installs my deck i am going to re-run them under the driver side(same goes for RCA's) then run the 4ga power wire down the passenger side, i think i found a hole in the firewall where a line(probably for the heater or something) goes through and there should be enough extra room...
hopefully tomorrow i can get ~20ft of kicker 4awg, buy RCA's and start building the box/rack.

^ holy long sentence batman, i just noticed. i think i need to stop using commas so much....

edit, i tore apart the back some more
dusty like most of the car was, but no cigarette butts so...
    793.jpg
i also(poorly) made a cardboard template of what will be the top of the box/rack set up

i think i will run the alternator wire up on the firewall, past the TB on the firewall, then on the bottom of the intake tube over to the battery

edit2: i moved that ground to the tranny
    794.jpg
i also went to HD and got:
    4X8' .75" MDF sheet
    gorilla wood glue
    door screen mesh stuff
    screws....

    edit3:
pieces for my box will be
    H......W.....quantity.....where.........notes
    5.5....21....2..............side
    5.5...12.5..2..............side
    14....21.....1..............top
    16....21.....1..............bottom........one 21" wide side cut at a 45* angle
9......21.....1..............amp rack.....will need trimmed width wise to clear
  • bought a cheapo stinger install kit
got the kenwood deck installed, and ran all the signal wires under the carpet on the drivers side.
going to run the power tomorrow or wednesday, going to build the box on wednesday

edit: i got bored and ran the power and remote... it took 3 hours, 2.5 of which were trying to find a good hole in the firewall.... and i just finished at 1AM...
random, some cop was creepin' when i was running the wires under the carpet...
  • i got the sub and amp all set up in the sh*tty box. sounds decent for being in that sh*tty of a box.
then i started building the custom box.... less then 20" into the MDF the circular saw dies... now i have to wait till thursday night or friday
  • still needs work but here's pics
    1032.jpg
    1033.jpg
the pink stuff is bondo, for reinforcement of the seams, liquid nail is actually what does most of the sealing

    EDIT
that amp rack was a fail. now i have to figure something else out.
test fit after i removed the rack.

    1043.jpg

i also installed a better kenwood deck

all i have left to do in the back is:
    carpet
    grill
    eventually:
alpine type R or a DC audio ___
audiopipe amp(great bang for the buck)
  • i found some old bondo on the hatch, now i know why it wasn't original paint there
    1268.jpg
yes i used green duct tape for masking, LOL

i need to pick up some bondo....
  • i did a little body work, bondo, sand, bondo, sand, primed
    1366.jpg
yes, that's green duct tape you see

when i was bored of watching bondo dry i started looking at random chit on my car.... i found a vacuum(?) line that was plugged with a .357 mag case
    1367.jpg
i am liking that so that's staying until/if i swap MPFI
  • Ha Ha Ha Ha Thats the funniest shit I've seen in a while.. A farmer didn't own this before right? lol gotta love farmerization......
But looks like a good start and you're givin that wagon some needed love =)
  • need to sand, repaint and buff it, rattle can clear coat is no bueno
    12.jpg
  • did what i said above, still a lil' uneven
    30.jpg
    also, stealthy-ness
    31.jpg
  • i got the last of the over spray off and took a picture
    274.jpg

i was looking through my phone and found a before picture of the back
    nasty
    275.jpg

    Nice speaker system man!
  • ^ i just need new door speakers and i'm set for a while.... until i have money to waste on more bass.... but i have to replace the motor before then

found out that my shaking at 55+ is more then likely the front driver side wheel bearing. i don't care really because it doesn't pull....
  • Gumby29Gumby29 Band Wagon
nice project... good start i must say!!
  • i finally got some mesh over the sub, no worrying about throw chit in the back
    485.jpg

i need to get some nice carpet for the back
  • bondo'd the mesh
    494.jpg

    and painted the KX144 frame
    495.jpg
  • davidgdavidg Band Wagon
nice. what size sub is it?
  • 10" MTX blue thunder 8ohm made in 1999

today i finally ran a 4awg wire from the alternator to the positive on the battery.
i think i may get an NSX alternator and a pc680 battery for in the back
  • davidgdavidg Band Wagon
oh it looks good nice place to put it
  • i cleaned the living f*ck out of mine and it's still dirty and looked for a place to cleanly mount my 115v power inverter, i am thinking inside the little storage cubby hole in the back... maybe
  • boo! headlights + my normal volume level(29 out of 35) = alternator and battery can't supply enough power, which means deck cuts out and resets it self.
this confirms that i need to upgrade my alternator... probably either NSX or egay 130amp high output.... might as well run a secondary battery so when i am running my music and/or power inverter without the car running it won't kill my primary/starting....
  • ^^^^ This happened to me with my subs.. I cleaned off my terminals with a brush and it works now so try that out cause it'll save ya from possibly having to buy a battery =)
  • chorne1787chorne1787 Band Wagon
yeah make sure all your cables are hooked up too love the sub box will be doing that to mine when i get it
  • all the connections are tight and clean... however i do not remember if i sanded the chassis ground down when i installed the 4AWG hyperflex...
now i have something to do tomorrow...

    i need a job dammit
  • chorne1787chorne1787 Band Wagon
lol its not all its cracked up to be lol im currently deployed for 6 months just got back in feb and i have my first child on the way lol hence the reason i want a wagovan as my other cars can't do baby duty lol (miata s2000 mazdaspeed3 gas drinker lol) so wagovan will be super fun and still beable to pull daddy duty
  • i found a guy up in denver parting out an 89 RT4WD so i might be going there to get a full RT4wd drive train and suspension or maybe a parts car...
i sanded some of the rust off of the back seat
    1061.jpg
then i took the front H off...
    1062.jpg
    my current hatch prop
