Wiring Questions

Im putting a d16z6 into my 91 wagon and im getting nothing but headaches reading up on the dpfi to mpfi. Ive got the engine harness off the d16. i dont have the harness that goes from the engine harness through the fire wall to the ecu. Do i need this????? If i do will one out of an automatic work? ive got a p28 ecu(hondata s300 to come). Another question is im running hi impedance injectors so im thinking i wont need the resistor box. or am i wrong? any help will be greatly appreciated im going nuts and have started to lose sleep over it. i have searched here, honda-tech, d-series, and a lot more for info but im still pulling my hair out.

Help :(

You don't need the harness thru the firewall. You'll just add a subharness with the needed wires. Do the normal MPFI conversion, using your d16z6 harness for donor plugs and wires. You'll be modifying the OE engine harness.

Besides the MPFI wiring, if you're using a p28, you'll have to convert to OBD1. Use the z6 injectors and the injector plugs from the z6 harness with no resistor.

This is a pretty complicated swap wiring-wise. I recommend a store-bought solution, at least for the ECU jumper. You can do the basic MPFI swap wiring, then for about $100 get the obd0-obd1 jumper from Rywire or the like. It will include the subharness for everything you need to add for the obd1 conversion.

Big help. i was confused if i was supposed to use the stock harness or the d16 one. so all i have to do is use the plugs off it?
For that conversion harness is this what your talking about

yes thats the adapter but i would get it from rywire simple instructions and its very direct like as in if u have any questiosn when u email rywire i bet your talking with someone that builds the stuff or the next person in line from the person that does. if i ever do another mpfi swap ill prolly just have it done by rywire for piece of mind since last time i managed to burn up a perfectly good z6 dizzy and no matter how good i try i feel like my wiring skills suck! then u get a clean harness all swapped to obd1 that is almost dummy proof.
  • I used the Boomslang harness adapter and subharness. Came out nice and it was pretty easy to do. It came with very clear instructions.

thanks for all the help guys. id like to send it out to rywire but im going for the, i did it all myself approach. hate isnt the right word for how much i hate wiring it goes much deeper than that but u must learn sometime. im also hoping i'll have it running by the end of the month and they said like 3 weeks for them to do it. I miss my wagon, not driving her for 8 months is to long. :(

Just to clarify: that obd1 conversion harness will allow you to plug in your p28 ecu and will provide the 7 wires you need for the O2 sensor and VTEC functions. You'll still need to modify your engine harness for MPFI and pin those 4 wires into your car's ECU plug.
OR...you can buy the whole shooting match, just plugnplay except for the same 4 wires you'll have to solder and repin.

Everybody hates on wiring, but if you have the right tools, parts, and instructions it's not bad! The internet is a great resource for all the info you need, but you HAVE to have the right tools! A good pair of wire strippers, something that can crimp, wire cutters, 3M or scotch brand electrical tape, heat-shrink, voltmeter, and of course all the just perfectly the right sized electrical connectors to crimp onto the wires. And if you really want to do it right a soldering iron. Haynes and FSMs for the win for having great electrical troubleshooting instructions if you know how to use a voltmeter.
  • Im having the same problem. driving me nuts.
