MPFI... she lives!!!!!!!

wagodizzlewagodizzle Council Member and EDM expert
ok, so i am in the process of converting my car to MPFI, and i finished everything, all the wiring, etc.. i go to start my car, cranks right up but instantly jumps to about 3200 rpms and just sits the going ba-da-ba-da-ba-da as if it was at the redline. i instantly thought i was the TPS so i checked it too make sure i had switched the green and yellow wires, and i did, but i switched it again just to make sure and the car is still doing the same. could it be that i just didnt connect the extended wires so it is still the TPS or is there something else that could be causing this???

thanks in advance

i might add, i even ran it without the TPS plugged in, still was the same.
  • TPS doesn't do much until you are going down the road.. Your throttle is closed at idle anyways..

Go to www.hondaswap.com they could be able to help..

    Is it throwing any codes?
  • turbo_tegturbo_teg Council Member
vacume leaks? the throttle cable isnt adjusted wrong is it? codes?
  • wagodizzlewagodizzle Council Member and EDM expert
no, the throttle cable is completely closed :?

i'm gonna go check for codes....
  • wagodizzlewagodizzle Council Member and EDM expert
alright, its throwing code 15 and code 4, Ignition Output Signal and crank angle, respectively.

i've tried numerous things to fix the crank angle code, switched wires, re-did connections, but everything is hooked up the way its supposed to be, wtf.

and the ingnition output signal... no idea what that is. google here i come 8)

alright after doing a little research i've come to the conclusion my dizzy is bad (i picked it up from a junkyard, go figure, it was covered in grease and is just nasty)

both codes are coming from the dizzy... so.. anyone with more expertise have any helpful hints :P

triple check your work here. if u got another dizzy try swapping it out.
  • wagodizzlewagodizzle Council Member and EDM expert
hehe, those are the very exact instructions i followed :P very clear, very easy to follow.

i have to wait till friday to try out a differnt dizzy :x (got a 30-day warranty on all parts from the junkyard, so i'll be trading for a different one)
  • I think the MPFI swap most common problems are not from the wiring, which has been repeatedly documented and photostepped, but its trying to figure which of the 15+ year old parts you used was bad. More often than not, its the dizzy.

Check out Distributor King on Ebay...about $125 gets you a completely new dizzy with lifetime warranty. I'm used two now and been completely impressed.

i had a bad dizzy that i put on my wagon and it threw the same codes. i have an obd0 jdm sohc zc dizzy i got with my motor from hmo. i will sell it for $75. pm me if interested
  • I'll second the distributor king recommendation. I've used two and had no problems. If you search honda-tech I believe there is a discount code that takes off 10% or so.

Edit: Just look on ht and you if you enter the code "hondatech" (without the quotation marks, of course) in the promotions box at checkout it will give you a 10% discount. This was posted in 05 so I'm not sure it still works, but its worth a try.

Here's a link to their store

sorry to ask a stupid question, but is that the same as a PM6 dizzy??
i need one, NOW. dizzies from Distributor King are $157, i dont have that much right now for a POS. anyways, let me know asap!
  • curtcurt Wagonist
ya it is the jdm version. i got it with my swap from hmo but i just replaced the one in my wagon before the motor died. so i really don't have a use for it.

alright man, can you check shipping to zip 29910??
  • wagodizzlewagodizzle Council Member and EDM expert
oh, when your dizzy went bad did it idle retarded and refuse to rev if you hit the gas?

basically, did it do anything near what mine is which is it "idles" at 3200-ish and sounds like its choking if i hit the gas but stays at 3200.
  • curtcurt Wagonist
that just what it did threw a couple of codes ignitor or something. it wouldn't go pass 3500. i thought i blew my motor but i was just a bad dizzy.

    pm'ed on the shipping
  • wagodizzlewagodizzle Council Member and EDM expert
    ..no pm yet!

alright, im really starting to fume here.

i just spent $120 on a new dizzy, BRAND NEW dizzy... anyways, i install it, get m car all back together, crank it, and *yay* it runs and idles great.

BUT--- check engine light comes on immediatly. im like WTF so i look at the ECU. it was throwing bunch of random codes which i finally got down to only one. #4, crank angle sensor. i change around the two wires, i rechakc and redo connections, EVERYTHING and every damn time i start the car its throwing #4. car idles perfect, but when i go to rev it does so in a veryyy nasty way, as if it was chocking and it wont go past 3200 rpms. i cant figure out WTF the problem is, im starting to get on my last nerve. i need my car, its been sitting for fricking 3 weeks now. what was supposed to be a "cheap" and "easy" swap has cost me amost $300 and a lot of blood sweat and tears.

PLEASE HELP ME PEOPLE!!! why is it still throwing code #4? i even checked with a different ECU, got a brand new dizzy, redid connections... so what is the damn problem???
  • wagodizzlewagodizzle Council Member and EDM expert
well i have been messing with this shit all day. i redid countless connections, checked all sensors, triple check the instructions from two different websites... everything is the way its supposed to be!!

and yet im still throwing a code 4.

my last guess is that my dizzy is defective. its a remanufactured one.. but i mean, what are the chances of it being defective??

    ARGHHHH!!!
  • curtcurt Wagonist
Code 4 - Crank Angle Sensor

Top sensor in the dist. and is used for fuel control and misfire detection.

If the dist. base bearing starts failing, it will start heating the sensor(s) up, destroying the magnetism causing a code(s). It will lose 10% of it's strenght, each time it is heated up, to a 170 degrees plus.

In most cases, replacing the distributor is the only alternative. Especially if the bearing has failed.
Honda does don't stock the bearing itself, but other after-market compaines are said to have one.

If you have problems starting the engine, or drivability after the install check your cam aligment. The seizing bearing might have caused it to jump a tooth/notch or two. From the extra drag due to the bearing failing.

its brand new though.. and the car starts up just fine. idles perfect, then if is step on the gas it stutter a bit then revs only up to 3200.

    POS
  • where did you get the dizzy from? My bro-in-law got a rebuilt one from ebay for about that price, and the ignitor failed after about 15 minutes... they sent him a new ignitor, though...
  • wagodizzlewagodizzle Council Member and EDM expert
i got it from Advance Auto.. its a remanufactured one. idk, imma exchange it tomorrow and see if thats the deal. im getting so tired of this crap.
  • wagodizzlewagodizzle Council Member and EDM expert
alright, got a different dizzy. same problem.

    SO NOW WTF!?!?

this leaves me with one choice... the timing is off. can this be? i didnt even touch that. i have done every possible thing and its still not working properly.

    why me
  • you totally DID touch the ignition timing. You adjust the timing by turning the distributor. You notice how the bolt holes in the dizzy housing are actually slots? That is so you can turn it and adjust it.

I kinda doubt that can cause it to run that bad and also throw a code, but maybe... Read up on setting your timing... and reset your ecu and see what happens.
  • put the dizzy in the center of the slots. its the best place for stock engines.
  • wagodizzlewagodizzle Council Member and EDM expert
well in that sense i DID touch it, heres the thing though:

i rotated it back and forth while someone else revved and it didnt change for jack  sure, it got the idle nicer/worse here and there but it still wont REV BEYOND 3200 rpms :x even had the battery unhooked to reset junk, fricking yeah.

the dizzy sits in the middle for now.

well imma tinker a little more today, then junk it.
