new intake noisy motor ? RT4WD

me and my brother put a short in take on my wagon last night. And when i drove home it was pretty loud reminds me of a wrx or something its pretty loud. the intake is probablly 5" long with a shorty filter. is this bad for the car or should i just get a new exhaust to help it breath. thanks

naw i dont see how it would be bad for the car. i had a shorty short intake on my teggy and that mother was loud too, the sound of the air suction was beautiful. i loved it, haha...

Only thing of concern would be heatsoak - the filter is sucking in all the hot air from near the engine and not the cold air front the front and outside the engine bay.

i have it angled towards the top of the hood so i can go deep in water i was thinking about proping the hood up some to get fresh air in there.

Not bad for the Wgn.Modern car intakes are designed to be quiet .If you look at the Wgn intake you'll see a black tube that goes into the fender(R).This tube goes into a camber which cancels out the noise.

Seriously i have absolutely no idea why people do this. Not only does it not suck any cold air into the engine bay, it increases drag and therefore top speed and fuel consumption go out the window (or the bonnet?).

Intake tube running to a box next to the battery, filter inside, tubes feeding cold air running to the box. It's not like you're going to submerge your car that deep. ;)

i get really brown with my wagon it barely goes on the free way ever i had it in 2feet of mud the other day. Thats the whole reason i have a RT4wd. I think the motors gonna be good i might put an exhaust on in a few months. I was towing my buddies toyota yesterday and it was doing very well for what it is and my buddys toyota has 38" tires and a 8 inch lift.

car has been running great since i did this mod, but the other day i was climbing some muddy hills and when the car started to slip the motor bogged down like i was in high gear or something do you think this is from it sucking in hot air.
  • dont worry i made this mode and yeah it makes a laud sound when u press the gas harder but man... people look at ur car like what the heck he has on his engine lol ... does it urs makes a small whistle?
  • D8237D8237 New Wagonist
no whistle to mine but yea it is real loud it might be a clutch problem i had to push my brothers car the other day ( I know im a hessian) i think i might have hert the clutch could that cause the car to bog down because it doesnt rev up or anything like its sticking.

no thats not a clutch problem....

is your ecu throwing any codes?
  • D8237D8237 New Wagonist
I havent tried that yet i have to go to auto zone or someting so they can putter there scanner on it.

no you dont need a scanner. the OBD-0 ECU was designed so anyone can check in easy steps....

1.) first of all unless the engine check light comes on there wont be a code. so you need the engine check light to be on
2.) the ECU is located under the passenger footwell carpet. pull back the carpet there you will find this bronze thing. in the middle there is a small "window" if the check engine light is on there will be a red LED light blinking in this window.
3.) count the number of blinks/flashes. if there is more then one code it will blink different numbers, for example if you are running a code 4 it will blink 4 times, pause, then blink 4 times again, etc. if you are running a code 4 AND 10 it will blink 4 times, pause, then 10 times, pause, 4 times, etc...

once you find out what codes are being given you can check what they mean over here:

    hope this helps.
  • ok.... clutch problem cant be cause it happen he install the short air intake and the started to doin that hard whisttle... when the clutch is already weired out then it makes a deep whistle sound and maybe some gears wont go in... change it right away or u probably will brake ur transmission on that day specially goin on a highway on 5th gear.... now i have automatic and makes that whistle like when it goes after 40x100 revlutions. i have no check engine light and my car runs great

thanks wago dude i will try this next time i can get the car in my brothers shop
  • yeah dude dont worry with that thing of the whistle sound.... if it comes from the short air intake.

If you so worried about this sound, why have you put SAI on in the first place :?:
  • D8237D8237 New Wagonist
i was only worried about the bogging
  • wagodizzlewagodizzle Council Member and EDM expert
idk somehow i doubt that the engine bogging has to do with the SAI. like i said, check your ecu ;)

    thats a start.
