Be warned, if that part is so rusty whats the rest of it like?
When you start cutting how much more are you gunna find? You may end up replacing a lot more than what you see there.
I hope you dont have to and its just that but it could be a lot bigger job than it looks
It actually seems fairly solid under there except for the rear fenders and around where the bushing bolts up. What appears to have happened was it fell through then they kept driving it like that in the salt and it just kept corroding and rusting away around there.
Man this is more than chemo work. This is like a full blown restoration. My 64 vw bug is more solid than this thing. Got the pieces all cleaned up and ready to go in. Pics soon to come. Now to figure out how I'm going to cut out the old shit and put this new stuff in there.
Can't really use a torch to get the old stuff out. I don't want to remove the gas tank and I'd end up cutting the interior sheet metal all to hell. I guess a cutting wheel is the safe bet, anyone else have any good ideas?
If you have access to a plasma that would be the fastest way, just turn it to a low setting and go slow not to hit the gas tank. A cutoff wheel will work just fine but they are a pain in tight areas like that.
Just be sure to wear proper protection. Also, no need to cutout the whole car to fit your new sheetmetal in. Replace only the bad areas.
I used a sawz-all and an 18 tpi blade, and a 4" grinder....not the easiest to work with unless you're used to them...
Like JayTee said, cuz it's easier to trim the piece that's not on the car so don't go killing yourself trying to cut the whole section off the wagon, unless you reaaaallly have to.
Sawzaw and grinder sounds like what I'm going to have to use. I'll be on it this weekend. I'll be sure to post up pics and everything. Thank you all for your advice and help.
II worked on it all day sunday and almost finished the drivers side. Looks good and should fit perfectly. I just need to clean up underneath the car a little more and finish the sheet metal then weld it up. here's a few pictures as I promised.
