Paint Job / Rust Repair

I was quoted by body shop, $600 for paint and around $100-150 for rear wheel panel rust. He stated 2 base coat paint job.

Good idea to paint black side panels or renew it some other way? Also any other questions I should ask the body shop to make sure everything turns out good?

$600 to paint it all over? That's what good materials cost alone. $100-150 for the rust must mean it's going to be done with filler only, there's no way that would pay for the labor to replace the metal unless he works for less than minimum wage. And what does "2 base coat paint job" mean, I work in a bodyshop and have never heard that term.

Have you seen some work this guy has done before? Sounds kinda sketchy imo.

Hmmm... doesn't sound too good. This is my first time getting a car repainted.

I believe he stated, depends on how rust is, he will cut and weld new piece on.
  • cbothacbotha Band Wagon
    That seems kind of cheap.

and exactly what he is doing?

Is he just fixing a small rust area and then blending into the quarter? Is he painting the whole quarter?

What type of color match does he guarentee?

Ask to see some other cars he has done. Also ask for references.

I recommend taking a look at his facility and see the other things he is working on. Or have him give you some references so maybe you can talk to somebody that has had things painted there before. If he can't or won't do that then you should move on. Also you should tell him that you would like to come see the progress occasionally that way you can make sure that he doesn't just pack the rust with filler. Or have him keep the rusty piece he cut out so you know it's been done. I do all these things for my customers. You have to keep in mind that you are the consumer. He needs your work to stay in business. Just for reference for a basic all over paint job I start the pricing at $2000 and I'm probably the cheapest in my town by at least $400.

Very, very good advice here. I will say my brother had his car painted for under a grand but his color was the original color and the body work was very very minimal. Basically a respray due to clear coat pealing.

A good paint job here in Germany is about the same as what MrM3 is quoting you. Good luck

MRM3 thanks for that info i am needing to get some rust repaired and a paint job on my wagon

Thanks for the advice... I'm bringing my car to the shop later to get an exact cost. Will keep everyone posted.

Just came back from the shop, said they will cut out and weld new piece. I decided maybe I'll just fix the rust for now, $275 with match paint.

Just went to the shop and I kind of regretted taking it there. I guess you pay for what you get. When I got there, paint was still kind of wet and they were about ready to take my car out of the shop to dry so I can pick it up within the next hour or so. The paint was still pretty wet, as I touched a part and could see my finger paint. But here were the before picture:

Here's what it looks like now. Is it just me, or does it look like there is still rust at the bottom? Also they told me the plastic molding will be double tapped now instead of having them inserted back into the holes. He stated no more holes because it's what causes rust and that's how the new cars do it? Any truth to that?

there is definitely still rust under there. but its better then before, at least a temporary fix.
i recommend getting it done "right" some time down the road...
  • Agreed. Rust is like cancer, get it b4 it gets u. Look good for a temp fix. ;)

He is so right, You need to cut out the bad & replace it or it will be right back.....

Yeah, looks like they filled it in only. What a bummer. Will have to get it done again in the near future.

    Will take pictures tomorrow.

Looks like nothing but filler to me, which will last 6 months, maybe a year. It doesn't appear that there is a flat lip along the wheel opening anymore. He didn't remove the tail light, bumper, etc for properly prepped paintwork. How does the color match against the door? He should have blended the color into the door as well.

To answer your question about the molding: yes most new cars are only double side taped on. No it is not due to rust. Hondas rust like they do because of the rubber strips inside the wheel lips. They hold dirt and water and that's what causes it.

Here's where I am confused. He clearly states he will cut it out and then doesn't and you are ok with that? As I stated earlier you are the consumer and he just ripped you off and you just shrug it off. Maybe I'm the one who is confused about how business works...

Thanks again for all the useful info. As you can tell, I dont know too much about body work.

I asked the guy again about cutting out the metal when I went to check it out the 2nd time and he kind of hesitated, "yeah its a combination of metal and fiberglass. We dont use bondo because its not as strong." I just took his words for it. Couldn't accuse the guy because im not sure if its 100% filler.

One thing I do know, not much more can be done when it comes to people who BS their way in life. Best solution is probably to just ignore them and give them bad reviews online so others will know.

By that description he used this. It's basically filler with aluminum powder added to it. Realistically you can expect a little over a year with it before it starts to show back through.

Or it's probably this. Filler with fiberglass hair added to it.

For $275, is that worth the price or should it be cheaper?

Wow, everyone gets what they deserve.

If you're gonna be a sucker, you should just start sending me your money...

Not necessarily true. You live and you learn.

Well personally I think it is a waste to do something halfway so I'm going to say no not worth the price. However in a business sense $275 for that is reasonable in my opinion. I turn down doing repairs improperly but if I was to do it I would charge something like that.

Get some undercoat or something for that wheel tub. All that overspray in it looks bad.

I have seen much worse bondo jobs but for a business to give you the false impression that they are going to cut out and weld in new metal and then to fill it with bubble gum is bad business. You could have done the same job yourself, for way less than what you paid, and maybe learned a bit in the process. Like you said, live and learn, we have all learned lessons and at least yours wasn't an expensive lesson.
