My Little Brothers Wagon (not a Honda)

Did a little Photoshoot for my brother since he doesnt have a camera and hasnt got any decent pics of his car.

Its a 1970 Triumph Herald 13/60 Estate and was sold new here in NZ in August 1970 (has the original sales receipt). Its 1300cc, and is very slow but very fun. He drove it 180miles (its still in imperial) from his house to here for a family Christmas, maintained about 60 mp/h the whole way.

Excuse the CD player, I installed it today and it is yet to be hidden under the dash

Plans are to lower it about 1" and fit the 13x6" widened steel wheels I found for him (stock is 13x4.5"). He has also been given a 1500cc Triumph Dolomite Engine and gear box with twin 38mm side draft carb set up that will be fitted.
Needs to be resprayed as the paint is pretty bad up close and has small patches of rust here and there that need to be fixed (he is a fitter/turner/welder apprentice so that wont be a problem).

I installed a JVC CD player for him today that will be hidden under the passenger side of the dash and will have 4" speakers mounted down there out of sight as well as 6x9" speakers hidden in the back.

Oh and heres a pic of the engine:

  • The wood dash is awesome! Car looks great!

Do you guys get any snow in the south? If so do they salt?
  • The dash is quite awesome, one of the things that makes me want an old car now!

Yes we get snow in central North Island (around Mt Ruapehu if you are looking at a map) and the South Island gets a good covering of snow on the mountain ranges and in the deep south. But they dont use salt.

For some reason there is a lot of old cars in the south island and a lot of them are pretty rust free, its not uncommon to see British and Japanese cars from the 60's and 70's driving around in pretty decent condition down there. This one however has always been in the north island, it still has the original sales receipt from August 1970

  • That thing is pimp! I would totally dd one if it ran good.
  • It runs great! Pretty much always starts first time and super easy to drive (just need to double clutch the downshifts as the synchro's arnt the greatest), the brakes take a little to get used to as there is no brake booster so you really have to stomp on them for anything to happen

I think he would DD it but he works at a steel mill so there is a lot of Iron in the air which lands on the cars in the car park and starts to rust, so he has a Nissan Bluebird for that.

It has about the same economy as my Shuttle on the open road which isnt bad considering its a 4speed and would be working quite hard at 60mp/h

    Only for a moment. :P

My GF has talked about moving to NZ at some point, and all I could think of was the garage of old school Japanese cars I would collect if on the island.

Angry looking little bugger, ain't it? I like it a lot. I had a brief thing with Leyland cars, way back.

couldn't keep the smoke inside the wires, though!

This doesnt have much wire to keep filled up with smoke

Before yesterday it had 1 fuse, for the lights. Other than the window wipers it doesnt have anything else electrical in it

It doesnt have an alternator either, still the original 12V Generator.

It essentially the same chassis as a Triumph Spitfire, which is a 2 seater "sports car" of that era.
  • nice.
    very cool.

Cool. My English brother-in-law had a Spitfire once upon a time- and a TR-7.

Q: Why do Englishmen drink warm beer?

A: Because Lucas makes their refrigerators!
