Help. Cannot open my hatch

I have an '84 Wagovan and I cannot open my hatch! I have the inside pannel taken off as much as i can but you cannot fully remove it unless the hatch is open. I can pull it down enough to get in there. I took off the 2 10mm bolts holding the handle on the outside on. disconnected the lock. Everything seems to be functioning properly down to the latch fingers that hold it shut. I can usen the electric popper and it makes a noise and my light is on telling me its open. but I cannot open it. What should I do?

    It's not an electric popper, it's a cable.

    Have a friend push down on it to relieve the tension when you trigger it, then try lifting up on the handle when you 'pop' it and maybe it'll open up.

    Is that aftermarket? I haven't know ANY civic from the 80's and early 90's to have an electric hatch mechanism.
