Battery Light

My battery light keeps coming on then fading out, some times it flickers for only a second and sometimes it is barely lit. Recently I was driving and my stereo went out, no power, then my battery light came on about 10 seconds later the stereo came back on and the battery light went out. I have also noticed that my headlights will dim then brighten up when I am driving, out of no where. So this is probably a simple fix but I am reluctant to think that it is my alternator because it is only two years old, voltage regulator, and I just tightened the belt (it could be the alternator). I thought this might be a normal prob with wagons, I have a 88 rt4wd wagon. If any one has any advice it would be appreciated. Thanks

  • I'm no electrical genius, but I can think of two things: the alternator/voltage regulator is bad (don't they put those in the same package these days?), or the ground is bad.

Bad ground is a common problem with everything. Make sure the battery negative terminal is clean and tight. Follow the ground cable to the chassis, and make sure that's clean and tight, too.

With the weird on-off behavior, I'm betting alternator, but checking the ground is easy and it can't hurt.
  • I had the same exact problem and it ended up being the alternator ground wire, the connector was bad. went to my local hard ware store and got one for 99 cents and slapped that sucker on there and it was good as new. :D

    Pretty sure judebert is right.

Sounds good, will check tonight, thanks for the answers everyone.

I havent been able to find a bad ground yet. But my idle has been fluctuating really irradically, up and down?? When I run the alternator test it comes up fine when it is parked, but the car always acts up when it is driven. Could the alternator test bad and just fade in and out when I amd driving, any thoughts or should I just by a new alternator already?? Thanks

Oh yeah, my wagon also is having a brake pedal issue, when you press the brake pedal it effects the turn signal beat, and will illumunate the turn signal dash cluster light when I press the pedal. Could this be related to the battery/ alternator issue I am having, this also comes and goes.

You have a short or bad connection somewhere in your taillight wiring, mine did that when one of the wires on the taillight corroded.

Pacifier's right.Sounds like u have a short between the brake circuit to the turn signal circuit.Either though the wire or socket. While Pressing the brake pull the bulb out & see if both elements are lite?

Let's solve this b4 we move on to the battery lite prob. That has me a bit proplexed. :|

So, there was a short on the brake pedal wire going to the brake kight switch under the dash, but my battery light is still flickering, headlights still flickering and the radio still shuts off randomly. I can not find a bad ground any where and the alternator still tests fine. I asked a friend at a honda specialist shop and he would bet that the ignition switch probable has a bad solder or two and they are starting to fail. Is it possible to resolder these connections or do I just buy a new switch?

On a trip i took this weekend i had the same problem and got really confused. Stopped the engine for a police checkpoint and went to start her again but got nothing.. checked out the battery only to find that the negative cable had pulled out of the socket.

I say you should triple check all of your main grounds. Theres two on the engine, one from the right hand side of the head and one from where the clutch cable enters the gearbox. The one that goes from the gearbox should carry on to the chassis and then back up to the battery.

You may have multiple probs. At least 1 of the probs is solved.Honda's are NOT known for electical probs.

Ignition switch maybe 'cuzing your stereo prob, but not the headlite prob. The only things that the 2 have in common are #31(60a) ,#33(40a) fuse in the Main fuse bx & the POSITIVE pwr line to the battery(from fuse #31).To answer your earlier ? about resoldering...NOT a prob.

:| Since u said the alt. had been r&r'd 2 yrears ago.Go check & make sure the ground to the alt. is tite.Check the other connector too.Pull it out & plug it back in.Make sure it's secure. Also was the alt rebuilt or new from Honda :?:

I think it was a rebuilt alternator, but dont know for sure. I went to the local honda shop to have them check the alternator, and he said it tested okay, but still a little low. He said that the alternator is probably starting to go out by the problems I described and that alternators can phase on and off when they are going bad. Thanks

    :| How's your budget.It's the alt.
I was hoping it was something else.
There's a lo road or hi road.
  • twalestwales Band Wagon
Low budget, what do the two roads for the alternator looking like. What would you suggest? I don't want to deal with this again for a while. Thanks

:| If u take the low road you'll get out fine, but if you f*uck up it'll cost you $15O.OO.

I've had a few friends w/the same prob. It'll take about 3 hours including r&r of the alt. & will cost a whooping $1.Basically they did a bad rebuild on your alt.All the signs you mention are worn brushes.Just take apart your alt. & put in new brushes. You can get the brushes from a alt.rebuild shop for a buck.If for some reason you can not put the alt back together...you buy another rebuild.

It's not that hard. You save $15O.OO.You can always Paypal me.I've done mine & helped a few friends do theirs.Good Luck.

  • there is only one way.

it's called get yourself a new alternator. don't fool around with anything else. you don't want to be left stranded out on a cold night in the middle of nowhere
    ..unless maybe you do?

my alternator went out after 1yrs' use, luckily the guy who sold it to me was a stand up guy and gave me a new one for free.
(you can go custom and have someone build you a +/-160amp alternator..that shit should last forever. the only difference is the copper brush)

as for your lights flickering, you have a short somewhere in the wires in the back..check the brightness of the bulbs when you step on the brakes.

if they aren't as bright as they should be remove the plastic panels that hold the lights in place, take the bulbs and remove them from the socket, spray some wd-40 in there and clean it out with a wire brush.

check all the wires from each socket. sometimes you get rust or moisture up in there.

All the ones I've replaced or help replace are still working. The guy that bought my EF says the alts fine...been 6 years since that brush replacement. It worked out great. Was tight on $$$ then & it's been 6 years.Even the dude down at the alt shop said it's usually just the brushes.

    Mrwagovan
the only difference is the copper brush

I quess I'll get copper brushes next time.

I meant to say the size of the brush. They all use copper brushes, the custom made ones with higher amps 100+ or more tend to have more. SUV people &Lowriders like them cuz they turn out more power for tunes, etc.

  • my battery light does the same thing but it wont flicker on if i turn on my headlight and heater for some reason....my battery started to die while i drove it the other night so i parked it.came back the next day and it started slowly but it started.drove 20 miles home with nothing on..then when i hooked up the voltmeter to the battery it was at 14 volts and chargin fine while it was runnin...any ideas...i gueess ill try lookin at the ground issue first...autozone tested the alternator 2 days ago and said it wasfine....
  • SiWagonSiWagon Council Member
    It's probably the brushes.
