How often do you replace your sparkplugs?

I tried a search..

How often do you replace your plugs? I used to do it every 10,000 miles. That interval is coming up, but I want to be cheap and extend it. I run NGK plugs, the regular ones

  • I usually take them out, check the gap and make a decision based on how they look, and how my car is idling/driving. I'd say I usually keep them in for 20K...ish.

Basic NGK plugs are like $6-$8 That is a cheap item to keep fresh. I change mine about that often just to keep my fuel mileage optimal.
  • Yes, simplyhonda, that what I was thinking, but I was just curious about what people thought.

I was also thinking about increasing my oil change interval. I do it every 3K right now, but like plugs, I just buy cheaper oil, whatever is on sale basically.

I change them everytime I change my oil. But I buy the regular Autolite plugs, they are like 2 bucks each.

I usually change my oil between 4/5k miles. Or before/after long trips (1500 miles would be long).
  • 30K miles for spark plug/cap/rotor/fuel filter/air filter changes. I use the OE NGK plugs just don't buy them from the dealer. Also try to do my trans. fluid every 30k miles.

4-5K miles for oil changes. I use regular(non-synthetic) 5w30 or 10w30 (Castrol, Valvoline, Mobil, etc) and anything but Fram oil filters.

I see no reason to do things early if your vehicle is kept in good shape. To me it would be a complete waste of money. Like replacing your brake pads when there's 50% remaining.
