4wd efficiency?

Hey
I was just wondering how well the 4wd drive system that comes on the 88-91 wagons work.
Is it a pretty good system for it being a 20 year old design?

  • Sure it does fine.
  • Might want to look up the wagon attack videos and find out for yourself.
  • It uses the same system as the Lamborghini Gallardo. Seriously.

Search around to get an idea. For the most part if you don't push past 250(ish)hp everything holds up well, and I haven't heard of too many people having issues with it with standard power.
  • Yeah, I've already seen wagon attack 2,
its probably one of the things that got me interested in wagons.

So if you were to turbocharge a engine that would send the horse power over 250, would it be better to get a FWD instead?
  • sure. only a few members on here have broken the 250whp mark on the rt4wd and typically the transfer case and gears are the first to start breaking but no one has really played around with upgrading these weak links.

i think red standard is pushing right around the 220whp mark when he made the wagon attack video.

for really high hp numbers you should go with 2wd like bisimoto did. he is pushing 724hp out of his wagon with a d16z6.

I hate to rain on your parade.I'm not sure about your question.
    The system works pretty well.
Durability is another issue.Do a search on this site. When I was searching for a Wgn. I found quite a few with blown 4WD trannies.Mine had a exploded transfer gear.I could NOT even find any pieces of the gear.Just metal dust.Honda had redeigned the 4WD tranny from frt.tranny back from '92(I think) on(to'96).'92-'96 is NON-USDM.
