Noise behind gauge cluster

I've always had this noise behind my gauge cluster. It is dependant on vehicle speed. For a long time I didn't realize what it was. But it finally dawned on me that it's either the cable from the transmission or the gear(?) cluster.

Has anyone else experienced this with 88-91 wagons or other 88-91 Civics?

It's usually the cable. Try removing the inner cable from the housing, cleaning and greasing it, then reinstalling.
  • My friends 2wd Wagon had a terrible noise from his speedo cable. Take out the gauge cluster, and do what bam bam says. That will certainly fix the problem.

    X2

Had this happen in my crx, clean and reinstall with new grease!
  • Cool, I hope it's that simple. It is kind of annoying.

What kind of grease you guys suggest?

I've used some spraycan chain and cable lube I had laying around, also used high-temp anti seize with good results. I guess any medium-bodied grease would work. The stuff used in CV joints comes to mind.

I used axle grease, just pulled the the core out, greased it and slid it back in! Was messy though.
