Difference between 92-95 and 99-00 d15b

whats the difference between the 2 d15b's?
i know one 92-95=ODB1 the other is and 99-00= ODB2

im gonna be picking this motor up tomarrow any info would be great.

here are the links to the 2 im talking about.

92-95 d15b

99-00 d15b

I could be wrong but i belive the 92-95 d15b has the same distributor mount up same as the d16z6. The 96-00 d15b has same distributor mount up as d16y8. So thats the big diffference.
  • The D series underwent a major change between OBD1 and OBD2. The intake manifold plenum size, runners, port design, and combustion chamber were all reworked to bring more power down to the usable RPM range, burn more efficiently requiring less ignition timing advance, and to better resist detonation. A second crank sensor was added to verify the distributor sensor (slop in timing belt etc) and to allow the ECU to run a leaner mixture at the bleeding edge of detonation. Knock sensors were also added.

There are more than one version of "d15b" per obd generation. There was a z6 equivalent (except that it's 1.5L), a non VTEC equivalent, and a Z1 equivalent all marked "d15b". Then in 99 there was a Y7, Y8 (again, both are 1.5L instead of 1.6), and a 3 Stage VTEC "D15B".

The engine in your second link is a 1.5L equivalent of the D16Y7. You might as well get a D16Y8 for the same cost.

As previously stated, you can use a D16A6, OBD1 D15 non VTEC, or any OBD2 D series distributor on an OBD2 D series. Using the Z6 distributor is useful so you don't have to change your wiring. But if you get an OBD1 D series VTEC, then you have to use a Z6 or Z1 distributor and no other making them harder to find.
  • And to answer your question to how you can easily tell what motor it is, look at the dipstick location. On OBD1 it is between the exhaust runners. On OBD2 it is off to the side. Then there's the intake manifold. The Y5, Y8, and 3 Stage VTEC manifold is a beafy plenum that looks like Schwarzeneggers arm. The Y7 throttle body faces straight up like the old OBD0 engines (excepting the D16A6). The Z6 and other OBD1 SOHC VTEC intake manifolds look similar to the A6 and can be differentiated from the non VTEC because the spark plugs are on the exhaust side and because there's a VTEC solenoid. The Z1 throttle body is extremely small! But I've seen idiots who didn't know the difference and put a Z1 equivalent in their car thinking it's a Z6!!! I even saw one in the junkyard on a riced out EG.

One last thing is that the Z1, Y7, and 3 Stage VTEC all have the cat converter right on the exhaust manifold whereas all the others have it after the collector. This manifold can be useful if you're going to go turbo because you can put the turbo right where the cat converter is and then reuse your cat converter in it's original location.
  • Also, don't bother getting it with the trans since you can't use it.
  • awesome thanks for the info suspendedhatch
  • Good info suspended hatch! I hope it's right!

    92-95 EG VTi = D15B OBD1 VTEC
    96-00 EK VTi = D15B OBD2 VTEC-E

But really, there are so many variants that the info we have just doesn't even begin to cover it.

Yeah I know! If only there was some kind of online encyclopedia that we could collaborate on...

It better be... since I've had them all.

    j/k

I've had a D16A6 equivalent ZC, a D16Z6 equivalent ZC, and a 3 Stage VTEC. In the junkyard there is a JDM D15Z1 equivalent D15B in a DX w/out VTEC-E wired up. When I was shopping for a 3 Stage, I picked through the D15B equivalents of the Y7, Y8, Z6, and B7. The importers don't know what they are. They only know if they're VTEC and what years they go to.

The JDM stuff is pretty easy to comprehend. The pacific islands and european stuff is all crazy. They go as low as 1.2 liters, w and w/out fuel injection etc. But depending on the exact country we're talking about, at least they have the specific engine code stamps similar to ours. That's how I found out that a 3 Stage VTEC is a D15Z7.

It would be helpful to track down the engine codes for the various "ZC"s and "D15B"s that were used outside of Japan.

I'm not cool. I'm just old.
