Carbuerator is full of gas? please help

i bought the car with 200k miles on it, the carb i noticed fills up with gas all the way to the top, it wont start , it just cranks and cranks. im getting fuel, for sure and i know im getting spark. but its odd that if i keep tryin to start it, the black canister that has gas lines going to it, the canister dumps out gas, is that a problem? when it did run when i first got it, it smoked black smoke. and ran really rich.? im heading in the direction of pullin the carb and cleaning it all, but before i do this , anyone help !? ive posted once before but im in need of some good advice?

It sounds like the carburetor bowl float is stuck, or the needle valve and/or seat damaged or stuck. I'm not familiar with your particular carb, but with very few exceptions it will have to be disassembled to access the needle valve. It will be at or near the float hinge, and its function is to stop the flow of fuel from the pump into the carburetor when the carb's reservoir (bowl) is full.

The black canister is connected to the bowl vent, and normally would only receive fumes. With your extreme flooding it's filling up with liquid gasoline.

A word of advice: Keep a fire extinguisher handy while working on this.
  • i fixed it everyone! i took the carb off, replaced the needle and seat on primary and secondary....they looked ok but the seat was old and corroded...after putting the carb back on, i charged up the battery , cranked it twice, pressed the gas pedal down a time or two, and vroooooooom...runs like a brand new car. the carb is everything on these old cars. if the bowl fills up anywhere near half, im tellin you pull it off, take the carb top off. its like 8 bolts and a couple cotter pins. take your time with it, look at the float bowl when putting the new needle and seats in,. make sure to flip the carb upside down and try to blow air into the gas line port. you shouldnt be able to blow air. turn it back side up, and blow air it will flow easily. hook everything back up and vroooooooooom. good to go! 45$ bucks later on a rebuild kit, and im getting 30 mpg again. before this i was getting abot 5 miles to the gallon! good luck everyone! post is now done! thanks all for your responses.
