Roadtripping the wagovan

I am using the wagovan for exactly what it was meant to do, a roadtrip! Decided tonight with my roomate and a friend that on the 28(ish) the journey shall begin. Were gonna be taking the bare essentials sleeping in the car if we need to and just creating shenanigans and exploring the country. How far do you ask??

The idea to me seems a little crazy, well a lot crazy, but I'm in my 5th year of college and about to graduate and never been on a roadtrip. The purpose of this posting is just to get some opinions on what to do, what to see, what to pack in the wagovan when it inevitably breaks down in west Texas and we are all killed by flesh eating hybrid rednecks. You know, the normal stuff. Keep in mind were all engineering students and gearheads so we don't oppose to stopping for car related activies, or better yet motorbike activities. I hope for it to be the adventure of a lifetime and I know this is the kinda thing fellow wagonist love so I figured I'd share. The reason for the kink in the map is for a stop at the big hole in the ground.

God I just hope we don't all end up in jail somewhere.

Didn't you hear, Mexico is off-limit these days. A wagon full of engineering college kids would be raped and traded for drugs in mexico...never to see the wagon again. But seriously.

Do you have time frame to this trip? If I were you, I'd hit up the mtns in Tennessee, and make a trip up to see some other rad mtns in Colorado.

Anyway, have fun and be safe man. I'd suggest emergency oil, antifreeze, and brake fluid, a small tool bag of those commonly used tools, inflate tires, good spare, extra distributor/main relay if possible. As for what else to pack, bam did a similar trip with his wife and he could probably give some more input on what to bring.

But seriously- F going to Mexico these days. Especially if you're white and look like your parents would bail you out lol

The only thing I can say, is check out Northern Arizona a bit. Especially Sedona and Jerome (google). Some of the most beautiful country you're gonna see, especially the route you're taking. I hope to be visiting there again soon. Hopefully driving my wagon.

Believe me we thought about going to Mexico for about a second. It doesn't matter because the other 2 going with me don't have passports.

So far I plan on taking: Oil, water, basic tool kit, main relay. I figure if we need anything else we won't be too far from a repair shop or an autozone or something.

I realllyy want to take my pistol with me, but I'm afraid of getting pulled over west of Texas (i.e. where my firearms license doesn't have reciprocity). I need to check the laws because I know even if the state doesn't give reciprocity to a Georgia Firearms License they may still allow you to have it loaded in your car, but not on your person. I know GA will allow some states that don't reciprocate to do this.

We plan on spending an entire day and night in the grand canyon area so we plan on doing some exploring.

I ride a sportbike and have been to Tennessee thousands of times.

We are now possibly considering when we get to santa monica staying the night with some friends in Orange county then taking the PCH north for a day or so, then breaking off and heading back east the long way and visiting my old roomate in Denver.

Check each state's gun laws and adjust your carrying accordingly. If the state is a no-no on guns, pack it and the ammo separately while in that state, but keep it accesible. I NEVER go anywhere without my .45

Better to be judged by 12 than carried by six.

I drove mines from San Diego, CA to Chattanooga, TN with no problems. Loaded with crapped and lowered. Probably would've make it back to Cali on that same stock motor. Haha. Should be a fun trip nonetheless.
  • Roadtrip?

If you come back through Paducah, KY on I-24, be sure to stop at Backwoods BarBQ. It's isn't too far off exit 4, right in front of the Lowe's.
  • this what i always wanted to do. i did some road trip back in 2002 when i move here stateside. i missed doin this. Godspeed everyone. enjoy.

    wagon......................................4ever.....................................
  • Can't wait to read the final results and hopefully see some cool pictures!
  • on the east side of birmingham, al, in leeds (just off I-20), is the barber's vintage motorcycle museum and racepark. http://barbermuseum.org/ its the largest collection of bikes in the country. they also have an FIM/FIA spec track that is always rented out to manufacturers and race teams, so there is no tellin what you may see. if my schedule allows, I could probably meet yall there. I live in the northwest corner of alabama, but I'm in birmingham alot.

I can take yall to some good BBQ joints too.

^I broke my hand at Barber, turn 12 I believe, about 3 weeks ago.

Unfortunately guys this never happened, I and my friend had both taken off work and were ready to go. My roomate, a student, had some family issues come up about 3 days before departure that would not allow him to go. My friend and I then decided it wouldn't be the same without him. It may have worked out for the best because Tuesday of last week I got quite a serious ear infection that put me out of comission for 2 days. Luckily I was already off of work. I did however buy a new computer with the money I was going to use...... Sad, I know. The wagon's AC also broke in the meantime, which would not have been fun.

I was kind of hoping this thread had went to the wayside as so I didn't have to stand before the panel of judging wagon owners that demand adventure in their particular part of the automotive realm.

Sorry Guys. I will now go back to flipping back and forth between the forum and AutoCad as to look like I'm doing something at work.
  • shit happens, the road trip can be rescheduled.

so what happened with the hand and turn 12? next time you are around these parts, hit me up...
