French Wagon : ZC DOHC or VTEC SOHC, that's the question...

Hi there!

I'm a twenty two years old fresh AWD Wagon owner that i bought last week

I'm living in France, i'm a mechanical part designer on a natural smoke and heat exhaust ventilator and natural lighting manufacture

I plan to have an horse growing plant under the hood of this wagon, by the turbo way...

It will run NA first, to learn how it works (my first honda, my first engine tuning)
with a Z6 head and intake, OBD1 conversion and around 10:1 CR
goal : better than our DOHC ZC EF

Second, low comp on forged internals, goal : around 100 wheel Monkey Power (300whp)

Read you on the forum!!

Here is some pics of my wagon, from the seller of it

Now the stock head is down (headgasket blown)
Waiting for the z6 head, witch will have to be controlled (come from a breaked engine, 8500 rpm + oil level shocked)

    Hi Guys
i have a dilemn: the headgasket on my A7 is blown, i planned on changing the head for a Z6 one (and OBD1 conversion, and... and...)

But is it as valid as change the entire block for a ZC DOHC??

the stock A7 engine have 290000 Km, 181250 miles

    ZC DOHC:
    Pros:
easy-to-swap (engine in, ECU in place of stock one and rollin)
130 real hp and very good daily torque
7800 rpm give it a great sound :p
    reliability of the ZC

    Cons:
Less evolution possible (performance parts available)
    No VTEC!

    A7/Z6
    Pros:
VTEC (just kicked in ya face!)
    Great aftermarket parts choice

    Cons:
stock, less power of a ZC (whatever with 10.3 CR ^^ )
surely never as reliable as the ZC
    No 8000 almost rpm possible

The planned first evolution is to turbo it, for a 200whp goal : what engine for that?

    please help me!

go with the z6 head since the aftermarket support will help you make more power efficiently. the market for the dohc zc is lacking so making power in that realm will be difficult.

personally i would run the z6 head and convert to obdI so you can better prepare yourself for the next step of your build.

    clean looking wagon though.

The D16A7 with a new headgasket and some ARP head studs and a cam should make 200 boosted hp with no problems. Here in the states the DOHC ZC takes a bit more digging when it comes to getting spare parts or upgrades so my suggestion is always to stay SOHC vs. DOHC ZC. That said, why don't you just do a full z6 swap?

i consider making the head swap only because i can got the whole head+intake+wiring swap free, from a breaked Z6... (this one didn't loved reaching 8500rpm with a low oil level, ungauging on a corner...)

but the ZC DOHC swap is soooooo easy...

i'm hot for this Z6 head swap, because it's non common in there (aaaaah france, proud france, who eternally masturbate on your sick US hybrids...) so i think doin it if the A7 is not too tired, but why not making the ZC swap, while assemble the turbo A7/Z6...

i don't know, i'll see on the next pay ^^

wait and see... thanks for the advices ;) and greetings from france

PS : the wagon is not as clean as that, it's rusty on the habitual points and have some bumps, a good looking nineteen years old car...
    i already love my EE476 :p
