Recovered My Door Panels!

I loved the headliner material soooo much, I wanted to do my door panels. Haven't seen a write-up or "How To" on how this is done! So I got around to doing my door panels today!

MATERIALS:
Philips Screwdriver
Flathead Screwdriver
BIC Lighter
Razor Blade
Material of Your Choice
Spray Adhesive
Masking Tape
Clear Glue
2-6 Self Tapping Screws(Per Panel)

Step 1:
Remove your door panels. It is a total of 5 screws located on the diagram...
*NOTE* Be very carefull removing your window knob. You either need the proper tool or a small flathead and a steady hand.

Step 2:
*You could do either one of the following. I tried both to find out what would be better.*
A: Remove these little plastic pieces on the back of your panel using either a razor blade or, I was told, a lighter,

Once cut or melted, take a flat head and carefully pop the remainder or the plastic off.

OR (If you don't want to do that^)

B: Tape off all the areas you DO NOT need to be glued.

Step 3:
Take a break!

Step 4:
Spray down the cloth area on your door panel and wait a couple minutes for it to get a bit tacky. Once tacky, begin to lay you material, making sure there are NO creases, folds, or imperfections.

Step 5:
Trim all the excess cloth leaving a bit on the sides and bottom (About an inch or so).

Now refer back to whether you did A or B on step two.

Step 6:
If you did A on step 2, you could spray the backing of the panel to the excess material will fold over. You should now trim the top of your material to the upper most rib on the cloth on the door panel.

If you did B on step 2, just trim it to your liking, following the original lines of the cloth panel.

Step 7:
By now you SHOULD have the door panel looking done! Use a clear glue and the edge of your finger to seal all the parts that WERE NOT tucked and glued back. Lightly apply the glue to you finger an slowly run it along the areas that need to be sealed. Let sit and dry for about 30 mins. If you did B on step 2, you are done and enjoy the fruits of your labor!

Step 8:
If you did A on step 2, you will need some of that clear glue you have left over from the sealing of the material. Apply it to the area that holds the two door panel pieces together. Apply pressure and wait about 15 mins. Go enjoy another beer! Make sure the screws you bought have a big head on them. Apply the screws into the plastic pieces you either melted or cut off.

AND YOU ARE DONE!

It got late and my camera died. I will post the end result either tomorrow or Tuesday!

Good luck! I hope this helps at least one person!

Didn't end up doing them. Stampern told me that not long after they start to get really loose so I opted out of doing them. Thinking of a different way to do them though.
  • Sorry, stupid iPhone and double post
  • How's that? If they pull off and get loose, then either it's the material that proned to stretching or you didn't prep; cleaning of the surface of the door panel or fabric. If the fabric is clean and the door panel you're going to glue onto is scraped of the old glue and cleaned properly you wouldn't HavE an issue with the glue. The other deciding factor would be what type of glue, only use the 3M stuff, the strongest stuff. I know a couple guys have done their door panels and still going on strong for the past 5 years. Proper prepping is the key. Good luck to whomever does it, but do it right the first time, then you won't have a need to worry about temperature or fabric pulling from the door panel. Oh yeah, forgot another factor is the fabric as well. Try to find a fabric with a solid back or material that you will be able to spray glue onto and not have it pass over to the front of it. Wait a few minutes once you spray both surfaces with glue, touch it slightly to see if the glue is tacky, then use a roller, the type they use to put laminate onto wood, heck you can use a rolling pin for flattening dough, just roll it, and you should be set.
  • Nice guide I'm probably going to do this very soon.

My biggest problem now is I can't seem to be able to get my door panels back on!

I was going to stitch around the outside of the panels but I can't get my passenger side off. It's stuck on something.
I know how to prep these things just not willing to do it when the humidity level is 90 percent and I don't have a garage to work in.

EDIT: Ended up doing my door panels yesterday and finishing them up today. Took them apart and glued the material on yesterday, giving the entire night to dry inside and put them back together today.

  • That there looks good bro! Great job! Did you prep the surfaces before you sprayed the glue? Wait til it was tacky and rolled it? Either way it looks great!
