I come to you in a confused state of mind :?

I recently abandoned the idea of building a b20vtec wagon when I kept getting problems with the cams being too big and it caused all kinds of problems. At any rate I have a new goal, kinda.
I want to make the wagon a road course car with mods as follows: rt4wd drivetrain, d16z6 with a 50-57 trim turbo, water to air intercooler (less heat soak), hf crx front sway bar, 22mm rear sway bar, KW Variant 3 Coilovers, body/chassis reenforcement, rear panel diffuser with a total underbody paneling, front air splitter w/canards, adjustable rear spoiler (maybe a duckbill), no rear seats, evo racing seats, 4 point roll cage, 5 point harness, POTENZA RE‐11 tires, and type R front brakes.
Now, I love thinking about this car being on the track as a real contender, but at the same time I think, "am I fucking crazy, it's a damn wagon".

FYI the wagon is not a daily.

kinda crazy but aren't we all. no matter what we do to our wagons if you do the samething to a crx or hatch they will be faster, handle better, etc... the wagon would be more unique.

    do it!

I think it's not worth it, the chassis won't handle well with too much power. Just get a toyota mr2 turbo.

And then chop your penis off

I say do the wagon, but N/A Bseries.

Just do bolt ons to the motor I/H/E but really work the chassis and suspension. Ive been to many trackdays and at the most powerful car generally isnt the fastest.
i.e. 140kw ITR stripped out, caged, only suspension mods were bilsteins and Spoon springs was just as fast if not faster than a 280kw Turbo EG Hatch with similar chassis.suspension set up.

The less you do to the motor, the more reliable it will be and the harder you can push.

    Just my 2c

RWD! RWD! We should have some billet transfer case housings sometime soon. It'd work awesome with the boosted D series. Just address all your engine cooling really thoroughly, and it'll be a blast.

If you go RWD, I wouldn't bother with the rear sway bar. Get your hands on an EF Suspension Techniques 22 front bar, and you're good to go. Then you can sort the handling by trying different spring rates. If you're going to do the RT4WD conversion, then you have all the fab skills needed to do the RWD conversion. Plus for road course work, the 4WD will not handle as well as you hope. With the newer STi and Evo electronic torque distribution they handle pretty well, but with our older basic AWD technology, it's not as good.
  • Well I am not converting the car from a 2wd to a 4wd I am just going back to the rt4wd system. I am worried that the rwd conversion that you are doing seems a bit over my head. ..... Well I guess the only thing that puts me off the rwd thing is the lsd/axle problems you are having and of course the $1000 driveshaft.

It's all resolved. I'm working on a new problem right now. I busted my transfer case housing. I'm looking at getting a billet
case made. In the meantime, I'm putting it back together with another OEM housing.

Since you already have the mounting points for the driveshaft, all you'd really need to do is weld up your viscous coupler. The LSD/axle issues were simply that Frank at DSS and I guessed wrong on what axle configuration we needed. It's fixed.

Have a look at my member's ride thread. There's a bunch more info there.

Why not just run smaller cams and stick w/the B series since everything is already setup for that?
  • Because I really miss having a single cam and I have never owned a boosted car before......and well everything other than the short block is sold.

Jaker the more I look at your build the more I want to follow your lead. I may have to budget in some areas but I can see that the billet housing will be a must. I know I would be able to at least get away with a cheaper 2 piece driveshaft. oh and thanks mate for being a pioneer in our little wagon world.

Not dumb at all. My wagon is a full dedicated track vehicle. Build what would make you happy, and just prove people (like the Mr. MR2 lol) wrong. O and be careful with the under body paneling because thats restricted in most classes. That is if your building to be in a class. Good luck tho!

    Do da damn thang!!!!!
  • Turn the wagon into a town vehicle for a track-use-only CRX
  • I can't say from experience, but it seems like the RT4WD will be put to waste on a road course. From my understanding, you wouldn't be putting power at the rear enough to validate the extra weight.

    IMO: Turbo + RT4WD = better suited for gymkhana/autox.

...btw, (if your the guy I'm thinking about) you should have kept the ITR engine in there.

    Yeah that was me.
I abandoned the road course wagon idea. I do want rt-4wd again but I still want to do the turbo D.
As of now I just want a FAST weekend boosted wagon.

I have a B16a in my wagon and runs pretty damn good. P28 ecu and I drive it everyday.
  • I have a question for you...and since I'm fairly new the community I'd like to ask it before I give my opinion.

Have you ever road raced anything or owned a race car before?

Actually no... I kinda don't care anymore about having a track car or a race car.
I just have a plans to make the wagon fun for me again and that's about it.
I am a very indecisive when I comes to what I want with my car.

Now your on the rigth track. Do what is fun and youll never have any regrets.

Locally, i handed ass to more than one evo/sti. never had any issues with wrx's, and my wife and I came up at a local PCA meeting about the cars you could lose to at a local autox. One member piped up and said "it was a real eye opener. I had my ass handed to me by a chick in a civic wagon."

Now nationally, thats another story. people who travel to national events are pretty damn serious about winning.
