Does your wagon have power-steering?

Was just told by a honda dealer that our local EE3 4WD wagon all steer quite heavy (when parking).
He seems to think that they never came with p/s where as all the other honda of that era did (ED3/ED6 & ED9)

Mine does. I think it only came on the awd wagons. Not 100%.

All U.S. wagons come with P/S.

    88-91 at least.

OK, put the beer down and realized you live in Australia. We'll have to wait for a member from down under to give you a real confirmation. I know the Pro is the super light/ no option model elsewhere. I'm betting that came without. But I'm sure there's at least one model with it down there.

Nope, Pro had AC and PS. Just manual windows, thin glass, basic as, no clock, AM only radio, single speaker etc..

We didn't get the EE models here so i have no idea what is stock in Aus.

In canada the 2wd have manual racks and the 4wd have power.. I have to change the rack in my 2wd :( the funny thing is the manual rack is more expensive than the power

correction: None of the 5speed 2wd cars I've seen had power steering- only the autos.

Good to know. I've never seen one with out.

Why does everyone talk about putting a non wagon manual rack in? Doesn't really make sense, but nothing does lol

I am still scratching my head as to how you got all those cars home with you on Saturday. Wasnt there just you and your wife, and 4 cars?

Anyway, my sister in law has a VERY mint Candain 90 2WD (under 100k KMs) and it has both Power steering and AC I belive. Ill verify the next time I see it.

but as far as other countrys, no idea.
  • RT4WD had P/S and so did A/T 2WD Civic's in the US. 2WD 5-Speeds did not, as mentioned. Hatch and 4-door followed the same rules, A/T added P/S and manual had manual racks....

my 86 auto 2wd has no power steering, no AC.
I did have factory stereo at one point because the speakers in both doors were very rotted honda speakers when I replaced them. It also has the clock.

Not all US wagons came with PS. My '88 Wagovan did not have power steering since it was the low-end model. However, my '88 4WD did, as does my '89 DX Wagon.

My wagon doesn't need it and never had it...it's a '78 for crying out loud! hahaha

Mine did. Now it doesn't. I like the "heavy steering" feel...

all 88-91 Shuttles had P/S in the UK

It's an international thing. Different options in different countries. Sometimes it's the law, sometimes it's for ease of assembly, ans sometimes popularity. Mark, is there any documentation that all 88-91 Shuttles had it? *not trying to insult you, just curious*

I replaced the p/s rack in my '91 4wd with a manual rack and was surprised to find that both racks had the exact same number of turns lock to lock. I thought the manual rack would have a different gear ratio giving the driver a little more leverage when turning the steering wheel, but nope - both racks seem to have the exact same ratio (about 2 turns if I remember correctly).

Another issue I ran into was the passenger side rack clamp. The manual rack is not as large in diameter (or as heavy) as the power rack, so the clamp that holds the rack to the frame with two bolts was too big. I used a thick piece of rubber to take up the space and it's been working fine for the past 10k. Nevertheless, I plan to restore the car to power steering because the manual rack is a chore when parking, etc.

Honda's failure to provide a more appropriate steering ratio in the manual rack strikes me as a design flaw.
  • ^ Which manual rack did you use? One out of another wagon? The Si and HF racks are the short ones in our years all others should be the same.

my 89 auto wagovan has both p/s and a/c.
  • I pulled my pump and welded the lines shut on the rack. steers quality now
  • Actually I prefer the manual steering.. Seems to be more responsive on curves.. It's small enough where parking is no problem. However, My first 2 cars were a '59 Ford F-250 and a 65 Chevy Bel Air, neither with power anything, so I may be biased... I took my driving test in the F-250... I think it intimidated the tester..

You know, it's hard for me to remember now the precise provenance of the manual rack. I got it from a junkyard, and I think I requested one from a non-p/s wagon. I figured the measurements would be the same in all the wagons. But it's possible it came out of a sedan or 3-door.
  • I'm contemplating taking the power rack out of my wagon. I have an 86 hatch that I run 215/45/16s on, and its not too bad with a manual rack. plus without the power steering junk, it really cleanes alot of stuff out from under the hood.
  • tshiretshire Band Wagon
Yeah, I like my cleaner engine bay without the p/s. I also like the car's weight loss and better fuel mileage.

But what I don't like is struggling to park and not being able to let anybody else drive my car since they probably couldn't cope with the high-effort steering. Not that it's too bad above 5 mph - actually, there's no real difference in effort between manual and power steering above 5 mph. But it can surprise someone who isn't used to it at low speeds.

If only Honda had properly designed a manual rack with a gear ratio that provided a little more leverage. These light cars really shouldn't require power steering.
  • No PS in my '91 2WD wagon- Yes AC

Yes PS in my RT4WD- No AC

I prefer no PS in small cars. I like the space in the engine bay and less parts to maintain, less for the motor to operate.
  • My 91 rt4wd does have power steering I was wondering should I remove it for better handling I mean my crx has no power steering and I don't mind at all but the wagovan is a little bigger so would it suck?
