Urgent Need Help!

Hi, so my civic decided to die on my road trip!! all the way out by Sacramento..

Just driving on the freeway around noon time yesterday, and all of a sudden the RPM just dropped fpr 5 sec and picked back up, then it did it again shortly, but it went back to normal within seconds, well 10min down the road it did it again but this time it stayed off, my friend said he might of seen a small amount of smoke, but i didnt and i could defiantly smell something. i coasted to the side of the freeway and tried to start it up again.. nothing.. well it cranks over and acts like its going to start but died the second you release the key from the start position, kind of like it dosent want to keep idel. So we pushed it to a nearby chevron and went to work. I had a good friend come help me out, and we dug into the dash in search of the main relay, we pulled it out and put a new one in and nothing... same thing... its getting later in the day and we haven't found anything, pulled all the fuses, checked the dizzy, wires, but interesting enough when i pulled the sparks out 2 of them had some oil residue. Cleaned them up and poped them back in, nothing... we wernt out the fuel. I can get the car to start and run if i hold the key in the start position and hold it as if it was running off the starter... interesting so i know it has fuel, spark, compression, etc... but just doesnt have the gusto to keep running. Well we got a tow to roseville were my buddy lives, and have been working on it all night and morning... ANYONE?? i need to be back in socal tomorrow morning for school and work, so please if you have any suggestions!!

im going to try this in the mean time.
-Reconnect all electrical connections
-Re-clean dizzy, sparks

Thanks

Sounds like maybe the switch itself.

Well after a tip about it might be the ignition switch, i drove to the nearest parts store and picked one up, well we got the old one out and the new one in, but one of my friends was taking off the distributor and didnt put it back right well when we went to crank it, it wasn't getting a spark so we took it off and checked it out... it appears that the metal part at the end of the dizzy that goes into the block, the 2 key blocks (??) got sheared off... So FML. I have to wait until tomorrow when the store opens again and get a new one, hopefully it will start up fine and i will be able to drive it back to socal... hopefully!
