i push the button and nothin happens. i dont even get
the light. in fact im wondering now if the switch is broken.
when i push it, the button doesnt stay in.
Sometimes it is simply unplugged. Check on the hatch, on the inside of the glass about halfway up is where the defroster has a little tab to plug in.
Also, if the lines on the back window are broken then the defroster will either not work at all or only work in some places. It all depends where and how many of the lines are broken.

1. light doesnt come on? my wagon was like this... the switch was bad. just replace it with another (hopefully that one works lol) i got my replacement from a sedan. hatchback ones are also the same.
2. the button is NOT supposed to stay in, its like that so that when you shut the car off it automatically turns off. EDM (maybe JDM too) is the opposite, the switch does stay in. however the EDM switch wont plug into a USDM car.
I know this an older post, but in case anybody else is using this to fix their rear defroster, I can confirm that when the light on my defroster button wasn't coming on i replaced the switch with one from a sedan and now my defroster works also. So if everything is plugged in and the light isn't coming on its probably worth trying to replace the switch. I got mine at a wrecking yard for 5 bucks, and it was 5 bucks well spent.

I have 3 wagons that do. That's why I don't know the answer to OP's question...I haven't had to mess with 'em!
