Help Needed Asap! Rear Axle Snapped!

As the the subject title says, my rear driver's side axle snapped close to where it mounts to the diff as I was driving to drop off my son. My dad is on his way with his tools so we can take out the axle. Is the axle something we can take apart on the side of the road so that we can put the splined part back into the hub? Is the car driveable with the axle out since the tire is only being held by the lugnuts? No, right as that is kinda risky?
Suggestions and ideas welcome.

Thanks in advance!

PS: The car is an rt4wd but is currently in 2wd mode with the driveshaft out?

you should be fine. it's kind of like towing a shell, there are no axles and it rides fine.

did you make it okay? I just saw you posted this about 8 hrs ago.
  • thanks curt, once my dad got there with tools, we were able to remove the broken rear axle and then pop the broken shaft off the spline section. Although my son wasn't able to get to his soccer practice, I was able to drive another hour and a bit one way to pick up a set of 4 Blizzak snow tires for my wife's minivan for $75!
  • Good you got it figured out, and score on the tires. Sounds like my deal for BFG Winter Slaloms I picked up for the wagon.

Curious how this happened with the axle? Was it rusted through or something? Got any pictures?

Not sure how it happened exactly but I'm pretty sure I know the events leading up to it. Back when my dad and I were replacing the rear LCAs, we noticed the rear driver's side axle was broken but didn't replace it(along with my broken diff mount, that's what was probably making the noise I was hearing last year). We just popped it back into place. I'm guessing it was beyond being fatigued and snapped. I'll take a picture of what remains attached to the rear diff. The axle itself looks normal, minus a few pieces of course that are strewn along route 33, mile marker 13 here in Northeast PA.
  • hah, yeah that makes sense.
