Alternator source?

My gf's wagons' alternator has gone out. Do I need to go OEM for a good quality alternator or can I go to a parts store like Napa and save a few bucks?

Honestly I would go where I could get it for the least amount!! One reason being is that most of the ones you buy new or remanufactured usually have a lifetime warranty! Now with my experience with Advance Auto parts alternators I dont reccomend.

you could try taking it apart, see if you just need a brush?

I work at napa. Anything with a 213- prefix I would stay away from. They are a 3 year warranty but basically they pull them from salvage yards, clean them and fix whatever was broken. Like a bearing or the brushes and leave the other old parts remaining.

Other than that the 13- series rebuilt is a lifetime warranty are fine and the 1N- New alternators are good.
  • welp, we broke up...

    so problem solved!

My wagon needs one though. On cold mornings I get the no charge light below 2500 rpms until it warms up a bit.

Now that was a easy fix!
  • lol, we made up. I got a Napa alternator, hopefully it works for a year or two.

as long as it wasn't 213 series, those are almost at bad as the advance & auto zone crap

Lots of places sell alternators with a lifetime warranty. Just plan on replacing them numerous times. If you want quality that won't leave you on the side of the road buy an OEM Honda reman or a denso brand alternator. yeah they are more, but they won't leave you stuck somewhere (with a tow bill).

I did my homework and cross-referenced my Odyssey parts with Prelude part & actually delivery was real quick also... 8)

Yeah, thats the bitch about it. Sure, they will give you a new alternator under warranty, but they won't cover installation, towing etc.

Car still has issues. It didn't have enough juice to crank today. I guess it has some kind of drain in the system somewhere.

Depending on how long it was going on, could have damaged your battery.
  • The original wal-mart battery is gone.

The battery that was drained was a 2yo autolite battery that my '90 was using.

We're just going to take the negative cable off at night and live with it for the time being. I'm trying to convince her that we want a Fit. I haven't had a brand new car in 15 years.
