The Desert Wagon

Now that I know I won't be junking / parting out / selling the wagon, I thought I'd make a build thread. This is going to be pretty straight forward; no turbos or engine swaps, or even headers for that matter.

I really just want to add some style to the wagon, and fix up all the little issues (like door dings and window regulators).
So here is a quick run through of the work I had to do to get the car to a reliable DD status:

Bought the car with blown valve cover gasket and head gasket

Found the Water Pump to be pretty disgusting

Replaced Everything I could once the head was off

Milled the head to remove damage from previous owner

Powder Coated the Valve Cover

And Cleaned her up.

So far it's been a great little DD, and now I have a couple things lined up for style points!
I've got a Yakima roof rack that I'm picking up today, and some Koni Yellows with the Skunk 2 Coilover kit on the way!

Here is my concept for the car, still trying to narrow down rims, offset, and stance...

    maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaybe... :)

I am still not sure about the rims. And I have some ideas on how to accent the car with the battleship grey color.
We;ll see how it turns out...

    Yeah! Nice.
The rack does make a lot of noise with out the faring.
  • are those hirise towers? your cars clean btw haha. Want to give me your rt wheels when you get new ones? hahaha

Yeah it's crazy the difference it makes. I don't even notice it up there. haha
  • ya, they are the wrong towers... they are raingutter towers. I made em work, but they are for sale. I want the proper ones...

I am gonna keep the RT wheels. I've already had a offer or two, but I think i may keep em, then have them dished and powder coated.

Well it's no longer a desert wagon! I moved to the south.
Before I moved, I took the wagon to Show Low to get some winter snow action. The car did well in the snow, and on the road trip until I was about 30 miles from my destination.

Suddenly, the water temp gauge started going down, then the battery light came on. The car was driving rough and losing power.

I pulled over at a gas station and found that the main pulley bolt had come off completely. The pulley was wobbling around and the alternator belt was missing.

It turned into quite the adventure. I got the car towed, the shop told me that the car needed a new crankshaft!! I told them to put down the joint and got a ride back to Phoenix. I had to leave the car in Show Low for a week. .The next weekend, I rented a car dolly and went to get her.

check out the pics from the trip:

And here is the old and new pulley:
Here you can see the damage to the key. My guess is that the pulley/harmonic balancer was out of balance, and having it wobble so much during the road trip cause the bolt to back out.

I got a new pulley, bolt and key from Honda. It was an easy install. Car is running well now, but just in case, I check the bolt everyday!

This is another common d-series issue - the key in the crank pulley getting broken or damaged somehow. I had exactly the same thing happen to me, i started switching things off one by one just to get me home.
  • StylEmonStylEmon Wagonist
wow, that's kinda a dangerous "common" issue! I hope this new pulley and key has been a re-designed not to do that!!!

It amazes me how much crap was just slapped together when they put in the ZC! I mean, I understand wanting to get her back on the road, but I mean, knocking this stuff out is way easier when the engine is out!
  • StylEmonStylEmon Wagonist
Sorry it took so long to get these better pics of the Wink mirror. But it was a super easy install. Just removed the visors and re-used those mounting holes.

I got the front lowered today. It went pretty easy once I got the forks off. I'm not dropping it too much, just enough to get a little tire tuck, ya know help out the stance a little. It's mostly visible if you notice the fender gap.

What size tires are you using? I'm about to shop for some 14" for our new RT. Sticker in the glovebox says 175/70, what's on it now are 185/70.

I got all the coilovers installed except the driverside rear. I was having a hard time getting the lock nut off the top of the shock piston. All the others came off fine, but this one was pretty stubborn.

By the time I got it going, the allen head was beginning to strip out. So I had to drill the allen head out with a power drill. I knew the shock was pretty much trash at this point, but I wanted to salvage the top hat.

I ordered just one shock from O'Riely's but it won't be here until Tuesday, so the car is sitting on jacks stands until then... :(

I have a feeling the rears are going to be dropped pretty significantly... look how much space there is between the top hat and spring still!
