Exhaust System

So Im shopping around for a good exhaust system, I need it from the my downpipe back. The best price I found was for $300. That comes with 2.25 pipe and hangers. Is that a good deal?

How much have you guys spent on the exhaust system?

  • I think for the most part a lot of us are custom making them. Mine is going to be 2.5 and I am over the 300 mark already so if you found one for 2.25 and it fits the wagon I say it is a pretty good deal. However this is just me, I am sure there are other members who have fabbed up for cheaper or have made other exhausts fit.

i fabbed up my own exhaust with a Borla muffler and 2.25 inch piping for less then $130..

300 is a pretty good price.
do you have a link to this exhaust system?
  • I custom made mine with 2" piping, using the stock OEM cat, Cherry Bomb Glasspack (as a resonator) and an Ebay N1 style muffler with a silencer. Cost was about $90.

I dont have a link, I just went to a local shop and they quoted me $300 to make it for me.
It sounds a little pricey to me but I have to get it done. I would make one myself but in live in CT and its 30*F every day at this point. I welded up my own exhaust before and it was only 60 dollars.
  • Well I still don't think 300 is too much especially if you are having somebody else do all the work. I am in 200 just for the muffler, resonator, and high flow cat (all stainless) and a bit over 100 for the 2.5 stainless piping and u-bends. I have to fab and weld it all up myself as there is no shop here that will custom fab an exhaust (inspections are tough here). Luckily I have the tig welder and the pipe bender to at least help in the fab work, but I would gladly pay to have someone else do the work.

Opps, I forgot to mention - its going to be installed without a cat, I surprisingly passed emission without one.

They wanted 200 for a cat. Grrr no way!
  • i forgot to take pics of it before i sold my wagon but i had the cat taken off, and had a resonator and univ. muffler put in the driveshaft tunnel right under the gas tank and had the pipe exit through the subframe to the left side of the bumper......looked good, was quiet, and only cost 170....and it didnt catch on anything really, and my wagon was low

whats wrong with the stock exhaust size?
  • draginmywagondraginmywagon Senior Wagonist
the stock size is cool if your not running any upgrades or a swap.. but if you have any of those you should just get an after market one so mush more cheaper...

Mine is just a stainless magnaflow offset muffler with out a cat but with a resonator and it cost me bout $225. That's was all put on by a shop the most exspensive part was the muffler was bout $125. Oh also running 2.25 piping from down pipe back! But if u have a 2wd any ef exhaust will work(crx,hatch,4door) just have to make it longer or shorter to fit. My wifes 2wd auto has a neuspeed complete catback from a crx just exstended it.

not true... the EF is considerably different then the wagon exhaust, length is almost the same however. its the location of the piping that is different.

fwiw, the OEM exhaust system on the 2WD and 4WD had the same routing. only the muffler was slightly different (2WD had single outlet, 4WD had dual).

So my muffler is gone and my car sounds pretty damn good, I mean really surprisingly good! Not ricey at all, just low and toned well. What the size anyways?

stock piping is 1 7/8 inch (i believe)

I got my exhaust done this morning, Its pretty nice for only 300 dollars.
So basically I have an entire turbo back exhaust system that 2.5 in.

    True
  • Well my exhaust over the past week started to get louder, so I crawled underneath and noticed i have a leak just behind the axle where the pipe connects to the muffler, its rusted up in that one spot. the rest all the way to the cat looks good. So I take it to Midas today and they say I'll need to replace from the cat all the way back and want $629.00. Umm hell no! My car is stock, no mods or anything, surely i can get it done for half that.

Walker still offers the entire stock system. I ordered pieces from Advance Auto. The whole axle-back section is about $110 IIRC. I bought the elbow pipe from the flange to muffler inlet for 30ish.
  • The muffler on it is a walker that has a lifetime warranty through advance. If it needs replaced get a hold of me, i'll gladly take it in for exhange. As far as the piece in front of it, if it's a crack or something that needs welded I've got a mig at the house. If you're looking to replace stuff you can get the other piece from advance too. If you're looking to go the shop route, there's a shop on the west side called mad hatter muffler... quick, cheap, and decent work.

I think midas should rethink the "whole system" approach... the muffler isn't even a year old.

Thanks for the info and link! I took a crappy cell phone pic of where the leak is coming from. That side of the pipe is one solid welded piece all the way to the cat.

I think if you look at the breakdown, There's 2 pieces from the cat to there. One is called "resonator" and then there's "extension". I'm aware that the OE pipe is all one piece, but you MIGHT be able to just get the extension and splice it.

Me? I'd take fettcols up on his offer pronto. Just bring the Yueng!
  • If you have a 2wd and you're doing a whole new exhaust, run the pipe down the empty drive shaft tunnel.

2.5 will cost you some power on an N/A. You may see some gains up around 12000 RPM LOL. 2.25 is the best OD for just about all N/A 4 cyl.
