Alternator causing bad idle?

My 89 dpfi idles perfectly until I turn the light on, then it drops to a point where it rattles the hell out of my car. The battery is brand new and the lights dim when the brakes are applied. It all sounds to me like the alternator is going bad but I don't want to replace it if it is something else.

  • Ain't there some kind of Electrical load detection circuit that bumps the idle up when current demand is high? Maybe that's the culprit, or that may be a later version OBD that has that.
  • ya mine was doing that and then my alt. finally quit on me.

Mine did that. Turned up the idle helped alittle. Had to disable the eld cause my swap had the jap alternator.

Yeah, adjust the idle up and see how she does, had that happen on my mitsubishi.
