New to the group, pix of wagon after cleanup

I posted in the Member's Rides when I first picked up this 1989 DX wagon. It was fairly rough since the owner never did maintenance, not even an oil change. The owner didn't want to pay for repairs so she left at the shop which I take an '88 DX hatchback for maintenance. I noticed it sitting there and, although it was filthy, I mentioned I would like to find one like it. The owner let me know he wanted to get it out of his shop after a year of sitting there, so we struck a deal. The engine was rebuilt and he went through all the mechanicals, before selling it to me. I took it to an upholstery shop to get new carpet and front seats made. I followed up with more cleaning, Armor Alled the interior, and washed down the exterior. Still like to get the back seat reupholstered to match the front and get rid of the stains., although the material is fairly close. That leaves replacing the windshield for the inital stuff. Exterior paint, suspension, wheels, and other pipe dreams to come. At least, the car was pretty complete with nothing major missing. 'Been looking for a few years to have another wagon. Had a 1988 Wagovan (same almond color as this one) and a 1988 4WD wagon in blue.

I have been following this forum for some time and was glad to find a cult that appreciates a very versatile vehicle. Always a sports car and small sedan fan, so the utility of these wagons is a nice compliment to good handling and decent performance. Not to be too blasphemous, but the wagon is as fun to drive as an old MGB or other sports car, much more reliable, and can also haul a load. Still a good time to get one since parts are still around, unlike my old fav, the Datsun 510. They are getting hard to find and prices are outrageous.

Enough rambling, here's some pics taken today while it wasn't raining, for a change, in Puddle Town:

it is your wagon. it left you.
  • Thought I would share a few pictures of the interior after getting new carpet, front seats reupholstered, and thoroughly cleaning out the rig. Previous owner must have never cleaned the car and must have had a dog living in it. Gobs of doghair everywhere and incredible filth to clean out. The upholstery shop did a decent first cleaning, but I had to follow up with about 12 hours of wiping and scrubbing every interior surface. Lucked out on the headliner, it was just dirty without any rips or tears. Got a close match on the original upholstery and will reskin the backseat to match since the stains didn't completely come out. Trying to bring the wagon back to its glory with some mild suspension/engine work in its future. The body will get its love in time, too.

Just want to add that this is a great group of wagonuts. Once you get the bug for these cars, it's like malaria. You can never get cured, you just have to feed it. I can speak with some experience, having owned seven 4th generation Civics, two of which were wagons. Looking ahead to making more progress on my project here after the holidays on the wagon and seeing more of the nice work other owners here put into their machines.

i wish my carpet was that nice
  • Thanks for the response. I should have taken the before pictures and you would really see the difference. I think the upholstery shop had to putty knife the old carpet out. This local shop did a good job on the front seats, carpet, and initial interior cleanup. I had to dig down in my pockets to pay for the work, but this is my project and worth the investment, eh? Fortunately, my wife is indulging me since she has misses the other two wagons. She has her '91 DX hatchback that is pretty sweet with only 80,000 miles on it. Although she sprang for an early Christmas present by paying for the new stereo, she is starting to tighten up when I mention other work I have planned.

The difference between men and boys is the cost of their toys.

wow that interior came out fresh!! good to see your dedication :D :D
  • Whew, got the windshield replaced today and now there is this huge, clear view of the road in front of me. Although we have the '91 hatchback, I had forgotten the difference in the height and amount of glass in the front windshield. It's been 9 years since I last had a wagon and it's great to have one again. This forum is really a great resource and there are great examples to learn from. Looking forward to getting the body and suspension worked out. As for engines, time will tell.

Have been making progress on my "89 Wagon. The back seat was reupholstered and that finishes the interior part of this project. I will get some photos posted of that. Picked up some ol skool wheels and had the tires mounted. Took a little run up the Clackamas River outside Portland this morning while it was quiet. The road was clear and I had a fast drive all to myself. Pulled up to take a pic of the wheels with Mt Hood in the background. It's good to be owning a wagon, again.
  • Now that is a nice clean ride! Props to u on the cleanup!

I wish mine was that clean!

man that thing is clean :)
  • I completely understand when you talk about the windshield. I just got a new one installed and it was almost like driving a different car!

What made you decide to redo the wagon seats rather than replacing with an Si type seat which has a little more bolster?

I wanted to do some upgrades to car with wheels and suspension, maybe the engine, too. I like keeping a more stock appearance and have it be a sleeper, hence the style of seats and upholstery. I just like having it nice and clean with most of the mods not too apparent. That also works wonders with the policia since they just see a simple, ivory-colored Civic wagon cruising along. It will be set up to handle better and maybe improve its performance for some fun driving on the backroads where the Civics really shine. Actually, the upholsterer put denser padding in the seats and they feel pretty good. Not like Recaros like I had in a 1991 BMW 318is, but a big improvement over stock. As I mentioned before, the interior was a definite pit, but the work done makes it almost like new.

looks like its in great condition man. love that new carpet!
  • How much did the reupholstery cost, anyway? I figure I spend most of my time with my Wagon inside it; that should be where I put most of my effort.
  • clean as hell

The wagon has been a project that I had saved some cash to do over some time. I took quite a bit of time to find another wagon, having owned an '88 Wagovan (the real one with vinyl seats, one piece rear back, etc.) and an '88 4WD. Worst decisions of my life to ever let those go and I wanted another wagon. We're actually pretty lucky that there are parts around since I also wanted to get another Datsun 510, but prices for cars (even wrecks) and parts are outrageous.

I finally located this cream '89 DX wagon and it was pretty complete with critical parts I wanted to have. The interior on this car was a real pit, but I bit the bullet and totally douched out the interior with new carpets and upholstery. 'Just wanted to make this an upgraded wagon with a few tweaks. I spent just over $1000 for the work, but it was money well spent. Besides the great feedback from the group, I get a lot of comments on the car. I even get notes on the iwndshield and outright inquiries if I would be interested in selling. The same thing happens with our 1991 Civic DX hatchback that has only 88k on the odometer. Now I have to get the air conditioning functioning, tweak the suspension, and bodywork/paint. It's good to have this forum for reference and support in keeping a great cult car on the road. There isn't anything else like this on the road today.
