Article: How to: Remove Fenders

After all the EF/EEs I've owned, I've never had to take off a fender. It's pretty self-explanatory, but hopefully this helps someone.

In order to remove your fender, you will have to remove the bumper to access a couple bolts. With this in mind, I documented both...

How to: Remove Front Bumper

1) Remove the three screws on each side of outside of bumper (front of fender wall)

2) Remove bumper lights by removing the phillips screws

3) Remove two screws underneath

4) Remove 4 bolts behind bumper lights (be sure to spray with PB before and use 6 sided socket if yours are rusted to crap like mine)

5) Pull one side of bumper out a bit where you removed the 3 philips screws, to get past the brace.

This should get it loose, then pull from the front and shift a little to the other side to get past the other brace.

Bumper OFF!

  • How to: Remove Front Fenders

    1) Remove front bumper (see above)

    2) Remove screw holding on corner light and pull to the front of the car (not outwards! you will break the clips). This is for a 90-91 wagon, 88-89 will have two screws on the outside.

    3) Remove three bolts on top of fender in engine bay
    288.jpg
(no duct tape was used in the making of this how-to  )

    4) Remove fender liner if replacing, by removing the horrible plastic screws. If you're just taking it off and putting on the same one, you could probably just take out the screws attaching the liner to the frame and take it out with the fender.

    5) Open the door and remove upper and lower bolts between door and fender

    6) Remove mud flap by removing philips screws

    7) Now you need to remove a few of the black plastic screws holding on the lower trim in order to pull back a bit to access the bolt underneath...

8 ) The fender is held on still by a bit of body sealant, so you just need to pull (up and out) with a little pressure (be sure to double check all screws/bolts in case there is a bit of resistance). Done!

  • nice write up
  • Huh. I didn't even realize the fenders came off. Does that expose any extra space that's normally hard to reach?
  • The only thing I could see it being helpful to remove other than replacing, is possibly when you're doing engine work and don't want to scratch/dent them, doing a wire tuck, or possibly freeing up a little room for suspension work.

    Nice write up!
  • Thanks dudes - hope it helps someone. I know before I did it, the only bolts I knew how to come off were the ones on top. Now I know!

rear bumper is even easier than the front. two bolts hold it on on both sides. 2 you access from underneathe the car, there is (or should be) a plastic cover covering those bolts. the other two are inside. there are little plastic covers in the cargo area that pop off to expose these.

unbolt, and slide the bumper out.

thanks - worked it out! :) was going to do a quick how to! :)
  • Hey, I know this is kind of old, but I just did this and the rear bumper is not as easy as said. Taking off the front bumper was really easy, but the rear was very difficult. There ended up being about 12 screws holding the bumper on(including the screws holding the mudflaps on. Two of the screws were underneath the body that were really tough to get off. I must've been taking it off wrong, can someone point me to a write up on how to take it off or tell me the easy way to take it off if I need to do it again?

    Thanks

The bumper cover is held on by a white plastic bracket and the two flat phillips screws on the inner fender. you need to remove those screws to avoid damage, but that's all the bumper is connected to on the fender.

See IMG #1 by first poster.
