I am trying to get my brother in law to pop a aluminum set of 2" spacers.. Trying..

Thanks, I'll need them for the steer axle. on the rear I can weld on the upper strut mount wherever I choose- I'm thinking 2" lower in fact.

Today I went and bought another grinder to replace the one I killed last week. Got the subframes prepped and started welding.

This is the tough part. I don't get much practice welding, and this is thin stuff with some wide gaps to fill. It ain't pretty, but it will hold. I need to get some filler metal to proceed.

    Wow! Great work Trev!
  • It is really coming along. You did a nice job contouring the 2 subframes together. do you think there will be any problem with the mounting positions in the wheel wells? From the latest picture it looks as though it will be set forward an inch or 2. It could just be the angle of the picture too.

it does look that way; but im guessing that the mounting holes are perfectly (or near perfectly) vertical from eachother... the pic is almost like an optical illusion...

i could be wrong... i am all the time...

It's as near vertical as I can make it. Has to be, for the driveline to work correctly.

Nightly small progress pics: I had to work late, then got home and welded for about 3 minutes before running out of wire. Went to buy some wire and a few pieces of overpriced steel from the Home Despot. After that I went grocery shopping, so didn't really get much accomplished.

Got one side tacked up, covering the big void between the 2 frames

    82.jpg

Pointer shows where the filler neck comes thru- yes, it's going to fit!

Here's the other side, showing what I need to fill

    83.jpg

Filler neck thru the subframes- gotta do some filling here, too. Inside and out

    84.jpg

If you look here, you can see the strut mounting hole. I'm going to drop straight down from there with the cup from the donor car

    85.jpg

some filling to be done along that seam, too

lol this build is just downright crazy. hope it turns out well and thanks again for sending the parts my way! I hope i can put em to good use or pass em along

Well, shit. Got home this afternoon and cut the plate for the other side. Started welding and ran out of shielding gas... dammit.

    Will get bottle refilled tomorrrow...

I don't know why this picture makes me smile so...

    141.jpg

That's the rear crossmember in its actual position- looks kinda like a CR-V- you can tell at a glance that it's AWD

I went and got some argon, welded awhile, and decided to install this spare crossmember to make sure things stay lined up while I finish the frame areas just above it.

    142.jpg

    it's coming along...

Like 31 or 33 inch dirt or mud tires... So it can go anywhere.. It is a 4 wheel drive toy.. Time for the trails and climbing stuff...

Really just the same as the rear: 4 inch body lift plus 2?inch spring lift plus big tires.
  • Front upper control arms is what I meant to say. How do you plan on lowering the mount points? or are you going to do a longer arm?

I plan to drop the shock towers to match...I hope. You've hit on my main area of concern, good eye. Everything else is relatively easy. The other route I've considered is lengthening the steering knuckle. It may be a combination of the two methods, we'll see...
  • bam-bambam-bam Council Member
Not much progress the last couple of days.

Tonight I worked on the left upper strut mount. Here it's just tacked in place

    216.jpg

I think I had a revelation about the frontend, too. We'll see...
  • bam-bambam-bam Council Member
    Here's that mount braced:

    344.jpg

There was a pretty good void above the RTA pivot

    345.jpg

Used some scrap 1/4" x4x5 plates to tie it in

    346.jpg

Here's just a part of the scrap pile generated from carving on this beast

    347.jpg

It's almost ready to stuff the rear suspension back under. I want to add a brace to the upper diff mount crossmember, and still have a little work to do to make the fuel tank fit up.

My Walbro 255 showed up today, poly RTA bushings should be here anyday.
