How to DEpower your power steering rack, THE RIGHT WAY

I have done this to my miata and it works great. Free mod, just takes time. It beats the hell out of trying to find a manual steering rack in a junk yard.
I will most likely do it to my wagon, whenever I get another one :sigh:.
The steps would be just about the same in any car, being that most power steering racks should be designed about the same.
It seems like most of you are intelligent and you can figure out how to use these steps on our wagons.

i thought you can just loop the line?

You can just loop the line, but the ratios are different for the manual racks vs the PS racks.

so the manuals closer ratiod' or what?

The Power racks have a tighter ratio(aka fewer turns lock-to-lock). When I have de-powered them in the past, I have just looped the lines from one side of the rack to the other, and left most of the fluid inside the rack as lubrication.

do u leave the resivour for good measure or what?

cant we just take off the pump and line connected , plug the whole and leave the other two lines connected to the resivour? would this be pointless because the pump isnt connected any more?
  • Yes you can just unhook the pump and leave fluid for lubrication but the fluid will be added force that will be working against you while you turn. Doing it this way removes the fluid so that you have only the wheels working against you.

and so this way you wont need the extra lube any more because your removing the parts?
i was asking if we leave the resivour in and take off the pump and plug the hole in the resivour ?
this way seems like doing to much i mean ive taken off a steering rack and started to dissasemble it becasue i thought mine was damaged wouldnt it be better to just loop it / easier.
if its a little extra wieght on the wheel i dont mind ( thats why we're removing the ps in the first place ) but if its a matter of safety or integrity of the parts i guess this methods the way to go?
  • There is no problem looping the lines for lubrication, this is just a way that you can reduce the extra resistance. I guess it was a bit over the top to say THE RIGHT WAY

sorry i didnt mean to come off offensive or anything haha it is def. the RIGHT WAY i was just wondering if theres any added risk of deterioration or something from not circulating the oil idk maybe i over analyzed it made it more difficult than it had to be haha
