PS9 ECU code 19

hello my wagon bretherens.

i just came from the junkyard (labor day weekend specials 50% off) and got my wagon a PS9 ecu. From what i have read and researched, this particular ecu is from 90-91 EX auto. Again from my research this can be use for 1 wire vtec and this ecu is rare. I hooked it up in my 88RT and of course it show code 19 (lock up solenoid) since i have a manual transmission. I have searched again the internet using the mighty google to find out on how to convert this ecu to manual but to no avail. again from my research its will not interfere with the engine performance but only will throw a code specifically code 19. my concern here is "how to do the jumper or maybe cut some jumper to make the code go away". if you know how to do it or know a site with pics, please chime in let me know. thanks in advance.........

  • okay.........i did some research again and found the lock up solenoid pinout. its A8 and i went to check my harness and found that i have a wire. I havent check if where this wire will lead to. its getting dark and im goin to some bday bash. ill check tomorrow is this wire will go to the engine bay. im thinking of putting a resistor to fool the ecu that it is connected to a lock up solenoid. Then maybe the CEL will not light up.

    Any comments are welcome.....

    thanks and happy long weekend.

  • i finally found on how to get rid of CEL code 19. i remove resistors r62, r64, r66 and jump br2. you cant miss it cause its mark on the pcb board. i start the car and...........yea the cel is gone. The second issue now is fast idle. it idles at 1200 rpm at operation temperature. im stock again. please somebody chime in and share your expertise. thanks...

From what I can remember you need to chip the ecu and to activate the vtec you need to do a rpm activation using the a/c clutch switch to engage vtec.

I had someone chip mine but for the life of us we could not get vtec to work, everything was showing that it should have been working. It may have had to do with the vtec oil pressure sensor.

I ended up converting it to obd1 and enjoyed vtec in there :)

as far as your idle goes. It sounds like a vacuum leak. otherwise check to make sure your throttle cable isn't too tight and make sure its not all dirty and causing the throttle to stay partially open. There is more you can check but that should get you started.

  • Thanks for the response.

as far as my idle is concern, i tried both ecu (ps9 and my stock) there is a difference of about 200 rpm. my stock would idle at 800rpm and ps9 is at 1000 or higher rpm. so it confused me why there is a difference between the two even with the same condition.

so currently im using the stock 88 pm6 which is un-chippable. i have also acquired a po6. im thinking of chipping the ps9 and learn tuning at the same time.

if you have anymore ideas please let me know. Big thanks again.

well you seem to know what you are talking about. Not sure how much more help I can be

yeah i'm not sure why there would be a difference in idle, perhaps they did it to keep power up for the additional accessories on the motor (power steering, a/c, alternator). Thats a complete guess.

po6 would require obd1 conversion (dizzy, o2 sensor, ecu jumper harness) and would also be a nice thing to chip so you can run like it should be.

As far as the ps9 if you are staying obdo then i'd recommend getting this chipped. I'm guessing the oil psi switch needs to be bypassed. I know people do it (i never have though).

I believe the 90-91 Integra RS/LS/GS (whatever model was automatic) would also work as the ps9 since they are the same ecu layout but different chip (from what I can remember that is).

Its been about 4-5 years since I last messed with trying to get the ps9 to work.

    Hope that helps.
  • yes im gonna probably chip the ps9 and maybe i can fix the idle. this is the only way to learn something is do it. im not that worried coz i fry the ecu i still have the stock one.

    thanks again for sharing.

  • Did you find the ECU in the trunk of a Camry? ;)

The PS9 ECU will cause idling issues (high or surging idle) on a manual transmission car. Its something i've experience on both PS9s and auto PG7s. The best way (IMO) to get rid of the code is just chipping it with a stock PM6 map and disabling the CEL via TurboEdit. Then in the future just burn another chip with the VTEC stuff and everything. You're gonna have to put those resistors back in though. :p

    Thank for the info.

i did not found it at the back of the camry. it was in the car when i took i off. I will try to chip it as soon as time will allow me. I still a one stashed away at one of the JY here in socal. ill try to get it as soon as 50% is up again. see you around at the JY or at the meet if we have one.

    thanks again.
